Recap / The Odd Couple 1970 S 2 E 10 Being Divorced Is Never Having To Say I Do

Go To

Oscar freaks out when Blanche comes to the apartment unexpectedly. His fear changes to delight when Blanche announces she's planning to remarry, freeing Oscar from his alimony obligations. However, the romantic Felix grows increasingly concerned over the apparent lovelessness of the relationship, and matters come to a head, impacting Blanche and her groom and also Felix and Oscar.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Despite his constant irritation with her, Oscar tells Blanche that she's a great girl and she shouldn't rush into marriage just from fear of missing out.
  • Broken Record: Invoked. Oscar, fuming over the failure of the wedding, keeps replaying the part of the complimentary commemorative record where Felix objects to the union.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a riff on "Love means never having to say you're sorry."
  • Shipper with an Agenda: Oscar intensely ships Blanche with her new fiance, Roger, because he wants to avoid paying any more alimony. Felix calls him on it.
  • Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace: Oscar is elated when his ex-wife, Blanche, decides to remarry, as it means he'll no longer have to pay alimony. However, when the minister says the line during the ceremony, Felix objects, feeling Blanche is marrying a man she doesn't love. The next scene shows the angrily brooding Oscar, at home, playing a recording of the wedding on his turntable, and listening to Felix's "I object" over and over. Then Felix comes home.
Felix: I stayed for the funeral.
Oscar: What'd you do, stand up in the middle and say "I object, this man is not dead"?
    • The wedding is rescheduled for the next day, and when the same part of the ceremony is reached, the same objection is raised... this time by Oscar himself, who, in spite of everything, realizes that Felix was right and he can't let this continue.
  • What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: Felix breaks up Oscar's ex-wife's wedding (which would have ended Oscar's need to pay alimony) because he realized they weren't in love. Oscar calls him on it and demands to know what love is: (paraphrased a bit)
Felix: It's a strong, passionate feeling between two people.
Oscar: I feel that way about you, but I'm pretty sure it's hate.
  • Worst Wedding Ever: Blanche and Roger's wedding takes place in a small, intensely commercial chapel, with a maid of honor Blanche met when she bought her wedding dress. All this sets off warning bells to Felix.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: When Oscar suggests maybe Blanche decided against remarriage so as not to lose the alimony, Blanche is incredulous, pointing out that Oscar habitually loses most of it gambling.
