Ryan takes a job at the Crab Shack diner where a co-worker, named Donnie, might mean bad news for the Newport kids when he takes Ryan and Seth out to party queen Holly Fischer's parties where drugs and alcohol flow freely. Ryan asks Marissa out on a date, and when Luke again tries to intervene, Donnie decides to take matters in his own hands when he tries to starve off Luke... with a gun. Meanwhile, Sandy attempts to help Jimmy sort out his life, and gives him some bad news that be may go to jail for his unauthorized loans to cover his tracks. Also, Julie reveals a long-held secret to Kirsten about her past.
This episode contains examples of:
- Almost Kiss: Ryan and Marissa in the pool house, complete with a Held Gaze and a Moment Killer.
- Chronic Hero Syndrome: Ryan as usual. He tackles someone with a loaded gun.
- Contrived Coincidence: Right as Ryan is saying he needs a job, a waiter quits at the restaurant where he and Seth are.
- Ethnic Menial Labor: It's mentioned that one of the socialites has "an entire Guatemalan family cleaning [her] house for less than minimum wage."
- Gold Digger: Jimmy feels this way about Julie. He fully expects she will leave him if declares bankruptcy and loses the house.
- House Wife: Julie, with shades of Trophy Wife. She laments not having her own career and outlines her life as "We had a deal. My domain is the kitchen and the bedroom; his is the office. I held up my end of the bargain."
- Lonely Rich Kid: Seth has no friends outside of Ryan.
- Lower-Class Lout: Donnie.
- Ms. Red Ink: Kristen accuses Julie of this- "[Jimmy] didn't buy ponies and jewelry for himself."
- The One That Got Away: Julie accuses Kristen of being this to Jimmy- "He still has your prom photo on our wall... You think it's a coincidence that we ended up living next door to you?!"
- Rags to Riches: Julie's full revealed backstory. Since she rose in status due to a Shotgun Wedding to Jimmy, possibly also her being a Gold Digger.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Kristen takes everyone down a peg at the spa.
- Socialite: Julie and Kristen's 'friends.'
