Release: March 23, 2016
Film: The Phantom of the Opera (2004)
Tagline: Shark Jumping joins the Nostalgia Critic to look at the botched musical from Joel "Bat Credit Card" Schumacher.
This review contains examples of:
- Big "SHUT UP!": The Fandumb tells the horse this when it wants "FOOD!"
- The Critic also does this via text message when he gets annoyed with everyone doing the talking musical number in which everything gets messed up.
- Call-Back:
- When Michael Crawford's Phantom shows up, he starts trilling his r's.
- Mention of the "Bat Credit Card" gets Tim shot at by the Critic.
- Clip Show: Inverted two-fold. Not only is this review a clipless one, but even if it weren't, the songs would've had to be changed anyways.
- Crossover: With "Shark Jumping".
- Deliberately Monochrome: The opening is in black-and-white because Murky and Lurky have stolen the color to use in The Last Airbender.
- Ham-to-Ham Combat: Both the Fandumb and Michael Crawford try showing each other up with their singing styles and pointing out the other's hilarious flaws.
- Hyper-Competent Sidekick: The Horse.
- Musical Episode: Several songs were written as parodies to the classic Phantom's music, but with far different lyrics.
- "Not Making This Up" Disclaimer: The episode feels the need to point out that, yes, Love Never Dies is real, and nothing about the plot was made up.
- Questionable Casting: Invoked on two occasions.
- The Critic and Tim all laugh hysterically at the idea of Gerard Butler portraying the Phantom, since he never sang in a movie before. They even claim that he only got his role after Schumacher saw him in the critically-panned Dracula 2000. They then jokingly say that thankfully he was never grossly miscast again (while a poster of Gods of Egypt, where he played a North African god despite being very white and not doing a good job of hiding his Scottish accent is shown onscreen).
- Same with Minnie Driver who Tim points out is actually a pretty good singer, but because she was cast as Carlotta, she had another singer dub over her.
- So Okay, It's Average: Beth performing as Christine is seen by the others as "not great, just good".
- Take That!:
- Auctioneer Malcolm alludes to current copyright issues forbidding reviewers (such as the Critic) from using copyrighted music into reviews, forcing the staff to recreate the songs in a thinly-edited form.
- Beth!Christine sings over how she is as autotuned and meek as Milli Vanilli.
- The Fandumb claims that Love Never Dies is a Self-Insert Fic with Raoul downgraded, while the Critic compares it to a fanfic Hyper Fangirl would write. Towards the end, the Critic and Beth talk about how worse off the sequel is.
"FOOD!" "Shut up!"
