Movie: Howard the Duck (1986)

This review contains examples of:

  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: The Critic's opening lines:
Critic: A long time ago, a young filmmaker named George Lucas helped create a parallel dimension in a galaxy far, far away. It's a strange world with bizarre aliens and unbelievable creatures. A world that the sci-fi community will never, ever forget— Okay, the punchline is "Howard the Duck".
  • Captain Obvious: Regarding some guys on a bus who harass Howard:
    Man 1: Dat's a duck!
Man 2: What is that thing?
    Man 1: Dat's a duck, man!
Critic: (imitating the man) Dat's a duck! (he looks down) Dat's a tie! (he looks to the side) Dat's a desk! (holds up the movie) Dat's a dupid, dupid movie!
  • Driven to Suicide: Subverted. In the scene where Howard and Beverley look to have sex, the Critic prepares Jack Daniels, his gun, and finally puts a huge knife to his wrist. Luckily for him, he stops when other characters in the film interrupt the two before they can go any further.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: The Critic brings out a bottle of Jack Daniels when he learns about how many more times Howard will simply inject "duck" into common everyday phrases (namely, 1,358 more times). And when he learns that Beverly is the movie's love interest, he pours himself a shot. He then brings this out one more time when Howard and Beverly are having sex.
  • Mars and Venus Gender Contrast:
Howard: Don't shed any tears over me, toots!
Beverly: You can wallow in your own self-pity!
Critic: (chuckles) Men are from Mars, women are from Venus. Ducks are... from some parallel dimension where apparently they have duck tits. (Beat) And no shame.
  • Pun
Howard: Oh no, it's a quake!
Critic: Don't you mean a "quack"?
    • Later:
Howard: No one laughs at a master of Quack Fu!
Critic: All right, the obvious joke should've been "Tae Quack Do", but we'll let it slide.
  • Rule of Three: The clip of Phil speaking in duck gibberish is shown three times.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Sting: When The Critic sees the random female duck's bare breasts.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Lampshaded by the Critic when Howard and Beverley, having just met, are talking casually.
Critic: You know you're talking to a DUCK, right?!
  • Your Mom: The Critic does this when Dr. Jennings is possessed by the Evil Overlord:
Evil Overlord: I am now one of the dark overlords of the universe.
Critic!Evil Overlord: And your mother sucks cocks in hell! (makes a scary face) BLAAAAAH!
