Recap / The New Adventures of Invader Zim, S1E11 "Zim and the Garden of Evil"

Go To

During a Skool field trip to a botanical garden, Zim is inspired to unleash herbal evil on Doomsville.

  • Amulet of Concentrated Awesome: This is the chapter that introduces Viera's Eye of Fire amulet, which goes on to be her favored weapon.
  • BFG: Dib carts around one of his father's anti-Santa guns to fight Zim's plant monsters with. He later sets it to blow up and lets the Central Root eat it, destroying it.
  • Berserk Button: Nny Hates Being Touched, to the point of slaughtering someone who does so.
  • Call-Back: Dib lists the numerous times he and Zim have had to team up.
  • Cut His Heart Out with a Spoon: While angrily speaking with a superior over the phone, Miss Bitters threatens to rip their spleen out through their nose.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Nny killing a man just for touching him.
  • Enemy Mine: When Zim's plant monsters turn on him, he's forced to team up with Team Save Earth to destroy them. And then Tak shows up to reluctantly help as well.
  • Garden of Evil: Just like it says in the chapter title. This chapter's plot is driven by Zim unleashing genetically-engineered plant monsters on Doomsville.
  • Gilligan Cut: After taking inspiration from the botanical garden, Zim is bragging to himself about his new plan, only for it to then cut to the Computer disagreeing:
    Zim: I'm a genius!
    (cut to base)
    Computer: You’re an idiot.
  • Imagine Spot: Zim has one when he’s first inspired for his new plan.
  • Kaiju: Zim's genetically-engineered plant monsters, which turn out to be a single network controlled by the monstrous Central Root.
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: When Dib mentions the time he and Zim turned into baloney, Zim snaps that they agreed to never talk about that.
  • Literal-Minded: Seeing the beginnings of his new Garden of Evil plan, Norlock comments on Zim developing a green thumb. A confused Zim points out that both of his thumbs have always been green.
Norlock: Right, I suppose I walked right into that one.
  • Man-Eating Plant: Zim unleashes an army of these on Doomsville. Unsurprisingly, they eventually turn on him.
  • Mutagenic Goo: Zim uses this to create his plant monsters.
  • Mythology Gag: Dib references Gretchen's conspiracy theories about Miss Bitters' origins from Issue 15 of the comic series. He also mentions the rumor that she never leaves the skool and it was built around her, which has been floating around the fandom for years.
  • My God, You Are Serious!: The twins' reaction to Dib proposing an Enemy Mine with Zim.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Zim failed to put proper control precautions in his plant monsters, forcing him to team up with Team Save Earth to stop them.
  • No-Sell: The Central Root is impervious to exterior attack. It has to be blown up from within.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Tak is seen being attacked by a swarm of Zim's plant monsters. Later, she appears almost entirely unharmed and manages to track down the Central Root. The author merely says that it's because "she's just that good".
  • Playing with Fire: The Eye of Fire amulet that Viera gains in this chapter.
  • Running Gag: This is the chapter that establishes the joke about Dib complaining about not having a unique weapon, which will go on until he gets one in Episode 19.
  • Villainous Rescue: Tak shows up just in time to save Zim and Team Save Earth from the Central Root.
