Amalia True: "You still feel it. Mary's song. You know what a better world could be like."

Penance creates an amplifier to spread Mary's hope-inspiring song across the city — but first, Mary must find her elusive voice. As danger mounts against her group, Amalia propositions an unlikely ally and sets out to expand the Orphanage's reach. Swann further entangles Augie and Mundi in his business affairs.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Facial Horror: Amalia pulls off the mask of one of the thugs hunting the Touched, revealing that his lower jaw and most of his neck have been removed and replaced with pistons and cables. The skin of his skull has been split and poorly repaired, revealing metal underneath.
  • Interesting Situation Duel: Odium, whose body naturally repels water, tries to kill Amalia in a river, with Amalia struggling to escape him underwater and him trying to drown her. She ultimately triumphs by wrapping a chain around his neck and pulling him down, so he can't free himself and is choked into unconsciousness.
  • Intoxication Ensues: Penance goes to put out a burning cart, not realizing that it is full of opium. She gets a little loopy as a result.
  • Kill the Cutie: Mary, a kind and loving woman who only wanted to use her gift to unite the Touched, is killed by Kroos.
  • Madwoman in the Attic: There's a room in Lord Massen's house with something trying to escape it, and he's quick to hush a worker that nearly found it.
  • Unwilling Roboticisation: This appears to be how Dr. Hague is creating his masked minions.
  • You Are Too Late: Mary is killed while singing, but Penance's invention has broadcasted her voice to the whole city, and they return to the Orphanage to find that many Touched have answered the call.
