Recap / The Muppets Mayhem S1E3 "Track 3: Exile on Main Street"

Go To

A miscommunication during a recording session with Zedd causes Animal to quit the band and run away from home, while a misstep by Janice leads to a heated argument between Nora and Hannah that gets the latter to kick the former out of her home.

Tropes:

  • Asian Cleaver Fever: Animal turns to working as a hibachi chef and proves to be so good at it the other chefs dub him The Chosen One.
  • Everything Is an Instrument: In the Cold Open the band jam out to the sound of Animal playing with a Simon game.
  • Flashback: The end of the episode has a quick flashback revealing how Floyd and Animal met: Animal was a Doorstop Baby left in a cage on Floyd's porch, and Floyd decided to raise him.
  • Floorboard Failure: The episode ends with Moog suddenly dropping through the floor of the Shack and declaring that he's found something down there.
  • The Heart: The rest of the band completely lose all motivation to play after Animal leaves them.
Janice: We're just not The Mayhem without our heartbeat.
  • Hidden Depths: Lips, once again. Apparently, he used to babysit Sofia Carson when she was little.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: The whole band once they realize that Animal might not be coming home this time. It says a lot about how hard Dr. Teeth is crying when the audience can understand Lips better than him.
  • Is This Thing Still On?: Lips accidentally turns on the mixing desk mic so Animal hears the exact part of Floyd's comment about not needing the drums any more, but not that it's part of a general point about the whole band.
  • It's All My Fault: Floyd arguably takes Animal's running away the hardest:
Floyd: It's all my fault! I've never lost my little buddy, not even when he was a baby!
Nora: You've been taking care of Animal since he was a baby?
Floyd: I've always been responsible for Animal, always. And now I'm responsible for this.
  • Lives in a Van: Nora moves into her car after vacating her sister's. She does sleep in her office, however. At the end of the episode she returns to the Shack and admits to Floyd she has nowhere to go. He and Animal invite her in to stay with the band.
  • Noodle Incident: Apparently Animal once chased a squirrel all the way to Central Mexico. The band insists that the squirrel had it coming.
Janice: Who did that squirrel think he was anyway?
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Dr. Teeth, throughout the episode, has kept up everyone's spirits about Animal returning home eventually. So it says a lot when he starts sobbing while driving the van, and admits that he doesn't think Animal's coming home this time. Cue everyone (sans Nora) sobbing hysterically.
  • Parental Substitute: Though Floyd has always been the one to look after Animal and help reign him in when needed, it's revealed here that Animal was actually left on Floyd's doorstep when he was a baby in a cage with a note saying "KEEP", effectively making Floyd the closest thing Animal ever had to a father figure. This also explains why Animal was so hurt when he thought Floyd specifically was saying the band didn't need him to drum for them anymore.
  • Rule of Three: Animal's first two new jobs as a custodian and a receptionist turn out as poorly as expected, but it turns out that his drummer's skills allow him to transfer into being a hibachi chef VERY well.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Thinking the band don't want him anymore, Animal walks out of the studio straight through the plate glass door.
