Recap / The Muppet Show S 5 E 18

Go To

Famed comic Marty Feldman plays Scheherazade in the Muppets' rendition of 1001 Arabian Nights.

Songs and Sketches

  • Sinbad the Sailor: Kermit plays Sinbad as he finds a treasure trove and goes "Surfing USA".
  • Aladdin and His Lamp: Gonzo is Aladdin with Marty as the genie of the lamp.
  • UK Spot: "Girlfriend of the Whirling Dervish", sung by Whirling Wanda and company.
  • Wright Brothers: Sam plays a patent clerk who has deal with Wilbur And Orville Wright, played by Marty (his mother wanted twins). Plus the song, "The Laughing Policeman".
  • Ali Baba: A Muppet who resembles Marty plays Ali Baba as Fozzie mangles this version of the classic tale, leading into a chorus of "A Hot Time In The Old Town Tonight".

This episode has examples of

  • Cross Over Punchline: The gang from Sesame Street shows up when "Open Sesame" is uttered.
  • Fish Eyes: Marty's are the subjects of multiple jokes throughout the episode. At the end, Kermit states that they've "never had anyone make such an impression on [their] entire cast", and the characters who appeared in the episode all show up with fish eyes of their own.
  • Fractured Fairy Tale: With the Muppets, the tales aren't so much fractured as they are outright disintegrated. "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves", in particular, has Fozzie and two other bears playing the forty (or rather three, due to budget constraints and a last-minute sick leave) thieves, not only believing that they're playing the three bears from "Goldilocks", but getting that story mixed up with "The Three Little Pigs", thinking that they're looking for a straw house. And after things get at least somewhat back on track, Goldilocks herself shows up out of nowhere.
  • Incredibly Conspicuous Drag: Marty doesn't make for the most attractive Scheherazade, even besides him struggling with and losing his long wig several times throughout the show. Lampshaded.
Marty: It's fantasy. You've got to suspend your disbelief.
  • Royal Harem: In the Aladdin skit, Gonzo-as-Aladdin uses his first wish to become a sultan with a harem of dancing girls. This being Gonzo, he specifies that the dancing girls have to be chickens.
  • You Won't Like How I Taste: Kermit says this in the story of Sinbad the Sailor, when an evil genie (Sweetums) wants to eat him and his crew of frogs.
Sweetums: Even with lots of ketchup?
Kermit: Even with lots of ketchup! Right, men?
    Other frogs: Yeah! Yeah, terrible.
Kermit: Have I ever been accused of good taste, men?
    Other frogs: No! No!
Sweetums: Aw, you're lucky I got no ketchup!

Waldorf: [to the Sesame Street gang] How should we know how to get to Sesame Street?
Statler: We don't even know how to get out of this stupid theater box!
