This episode provides examples of:

  • Affably Evil: Whilst Gonzo is playing as Dearth Nadir, what's the first thing he says to Luke Skywalker? He comments how much he loves his outfit.
  • Baddie Flattery: See above trope.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Subverted when Chewbacca arrives. He shows up just in time to take on Dearth Nadir when the latter procures a device that makes the heroes' blasters useless, but after a brief struggle, he is himself incapacitated when Dearth Nadir summons Angus McGonagle to paralyse him with his horrifying gargling.
  • Buffy Speak: In the "Pigs in Space" sketch, Link Hogthrob blames the Swinetrek's rough landing on planet Koozebane on Luke Skywalker failing to push "the stoppy thing".
First Mate Piggy: It's called a "brake", dummy.
  • Celebrity Paradox: Played for laughs. Luke Skywalker and his actor both make several appearances in the episode, but never appear on screen together. The end of the episode, however, reveals that Mark Hamill and Luke Skywalker are in fact separate people.
  • Double Vision: Used for the final scene when Mark and Luke appear on stage together.
  • Exit, Pursued by a Bear: Kermit has Animal chase Mark and Angus off the stage when they attempt a gargling duet.
  • Fake Crossover: Unsurprisingly, this episode isn't considered part of Star Wars canon. The Star Wars Legends reference book Star Wars: The Essential Atlas would include Koozebane on its galactic map as an Easter Egg accompanied by a vague allusion to Luke encountering a dark sider there.
  • Foreshadowing: One of the shooting stars used in the "When You Wish Upon a Star" sequence can be seen backstage several times.
  • Large Ham: The difference between Mark Hamill and Luke Skywalker. Mark's good-natured and mellow, while Luke is incredibly intense.
  • Literal Metaphor: After announcing that the Swine Trek crashing, the Muppet News Reporter reads a report that Venus was about to crash into the Muppet News Room, to his confusion. He's then squashed by the Venus De Milo.
  • Not Now, Kiddo: Backstage, Robin tries to warn Kermit about something, but Kermit insists, "One thing at a time. That's how I'm able to put on this show without falling into a panic." He announces to the audience that "Pigs in Space" is on next, and only then lets Robin finish his warning. So Robin tells him that "the Star Wars people" have hijacked the "Pigs in Space" set. Kermit panics.
  • Our Gargoyles Rock: Angus McGonagle is an Argyle gargoyle. Who gargles Gershwin. Gorgeously.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: The narrator makes a big deal out of Darth Nadir's mysterious identity. It gets ruined when Nadir shows his profile and speaks, instantly identifying him as Gonzo. (This gag is reused from the Pearl Bailey episode, where Gonzo is the "mysterious" Black Knight.)
  • Recognition Failure: Mark tries to impress Kermit and Fozzie by doing impressions of Kermit and Fozzie. They don't get whom he's trying to do.
  • Re-Cut: "Three Little Fishies" was only shown in Europe. It was never shown in North America until The Disney Channel reran it in 1992.
  • Running Gag: Various characters asking Luke, "Who's your tailor? I love that outfit!"
  • Self-Deprecation:
Luke Skywalker: Listen, pal, we're on a mission. There's no way we're gonna be involved in some third-rate variety show!
Kermit: [deeply wounded] Second-rate variety show!
  • Shoot the Messenger: After the Muppet News Reporter announces that the Sheep Dog Trials ended with the sheep dogs being found not guilty, the angry sheep assault him.
  • Slip into Something More Comfortable: Upon seeing Luke Skywalker aboard the Swinetrek, Miss Piggy goes backstage and returns dressed as Leia, complete with double bun hairdo.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Both Mark and Angus like to gargle Gershwin. They even sneak in a duet until Kermit sics Animal on them.
  • There Was a Door: Luke breaks into the dressing room by blasting a hole in the wall.
  • Trilling Rs: How Angus McGonagle speaks, as part of his exaggerated Scottish accent.
    Angus: I garrrgle Gerrrshwin.
    Kermit: Argyle Gargoyles gargle Gershwin?
    Angus: Gorrrgeously.
  • Violent Glaswegian: Played With. Angus McGonagle, an extremely Scottish gargoyle, gets angry when not given his chance on stage. The worst he does is gargle, but said gargling is played as Faux Horrific.
  • Whispered Threat: Miss Piggy gives one to Luke when he isn't buying her Princess Leia outfit.
Miss Piggy: Look, Skywalker. Go along with this or I'll cut you in half!
  • You Are Fat: When Piggy dresses as Leia, Luke says that the evil lord who imprisoned her must overfeed his prisoners.

Waldorf: You think there's life in outer space?
Statler: There's certainly none in this theater!
