  • Song: "A Bird in a Gilded Cage"—Sylvester Stallone and a group of muppets.

This episode provides the example of:

  • Clamshells as Mouths: At the beginning of the episode, when Sylvester tells Scooter, "I'm happy as a clam," a bunch of clams show up, complaining in this fashion.
  • Closest Thing We Got: Fozzie needs a lady for his Saw a Woman in Half act. Kermit tells him he's found one (who turns out to be Otto in a blonde wig).
Fozzie: You did? Is she beautiful?
    Kermit: No, but she's willing.
    Fozzie: Good enough.
  • Everybody Cries: The song "A Bird In A Gilded Cage" leaves Sylvester, the Muppets, and the entire audience (including Statler and Waldorf) in tears.
  • Gladiator Games: The first guest sketch sees Sylvester fighting a lion this way. When Rowlf (as Emperor) gives the thumbs down, the duo break into "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off" instead.
  • Groupie Brigade: Scooter sells backstage passes to a bunch of Sylvester's groupies, much to Kermit's consternation.
  • Harmless Electrocution: As Fozzie starts to saw Otto in half, Professor Flan warns him about the main power cables—a warning that comes too late, as that's exactly what Fozzie cuts into.
Waldorf: Eh, what did you think?
    Statler: Shocking!
Waldorf: [chuckles] Yes. But was it funny?
Statler: Of course not. That'd really be shocking!
  • I Want My Mommy!: Otto whimpers, "Mama, mama, mama...!" as Fozzie begins sawing.
    Fozzie: Oh, shut up.
  • No Fourth Wall: Once again, Kermit mentions the Laugh Track.
Kermit: We'll see you all next time on The Muppet Show! You've been a wonderful laugh track!
  • Re-Cut:
    • "Lady Be Good" was shown in Europe only. It did not air in North America until 1992 when The Disney Channel reran it.
    • A clip of the episode was featured in the opening montage of Rocky III, with Jim Henson dubbing his line to refer to the guest as Rocky.
  • Saw a Woman in Half: Fozzie attempts the trick with a substitute lady, namely, Otto the comedy robot in a wig. The effect on Fozzie was rather shocking.
  • William Telling: Beauregard, after explaining to Sam that he's playing in the William Tell Overture, stands against the stage's proscenium. At the end of the piece, the double bass player uses the strings of his instrument as an archer's bow to shoot the bass's bow across the stage. The bow then pierces an apple on Beauregard's head.

Waldorf: Well, they say all good things come to an end.
Statler: What's that got to do with this show?
