Recap / The Muppet Show S 3 E 15

Go To

Lesley Ann Warren guest stars, but Kermit thought he was booking an act with a similar-sounding name, and such acts keep showing up. Meanwhile, Gonzo tries to perfect his latest act, driving a motorcycle off a ramp and into Statler and Waldorf's box.

Songs and Sketches

  • Gonzo's Motorcycle Act: Attempt 1
  • "Beasty and the Beaut": Lesley Ann Warren and Doglion's ballet interpretation of Beauty and the Beast.
  • Pigs in Space: Dummo Rays bombard the Swinetrek.
  • UK Spot: "Mack the Knife", sung by Dr. Teeth.
  • "Just the Way You Are", sung by Lesley and Rowlf.
  • Gonzo's Motorcycle Act: Attempt 2
  • "Last Dance", sung by Lesley.

This episode has examples of

  • Almost Famous Name: Inverted. Kermit initially believes the guest star is an act called Lesley & Warren, and then is presented with the trio of Les, Lee & Warren, but is pleasantly surprised to discover that it's actually the similarly named but more famous actor-singer-dancer Lesley Ann Warren.
  • Bait-and-Switch: At first, it seems like Lesley was sucked into doing an act with Marvin Suggs, but it turns out that someone locked Rowlf in his dressing room.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Statler and Waldorf's reaction when Gonzo announces that his motorcycle jump should have him land in their box.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Lesley is appalled by Marvin Suggs using live creatures on his Muppaphones. Marvin's response: "Of course they're alive! You can't make music by hitting dead creatures!"
  • Fractured Fairytale: "Beasty and the Beaut" ends with Lesley, as the Beaut, turning into a female Doglion.
  • Inadvertent Entrance Cue: Kermit declaring that they have a really terrific show with their very special guest star Lesley and/or Warren results in Lesley Ann Warren coming out on stage and Kermit discovering the mixup.
  • Literal Metaphor: When Rowlf takes over the act with Lesley, he tells the crew to strike the set and the Muppaphones. Marvin Suggs responds, "I would love to!" and starts hitting the Muppaphones while leaving the stage, with the Muppaphones saying Rowlf didn't need to phrase it that way.
  • Only Sane Man: Kermit admits he's not this; after all, he was the one who hired the other crazies!
  • [Popular Saying], But...: When Kermit announces that Gonzo's about to try his motorcycle stunt again...
Statler: We're not afraid. We know Gonzo!
Waldorf: If at first you don't succeed, fail, fail again!
  • Running Gag: Lesley's full name keeps getting confused with similarly named acts. First it's Lesley and Warren, the knife-throwing act; then it's Lesley and Warren, the dancing cucumbers; and finally, there's Les, Lee and Warren, whose act is never explained.
  • Who's on First?: Used as a Running Gag. Throughout the episode, people keep mishearing Lesley Ann Warren as double acts named Lesley and Warren (or in the last case, a triple act named Les, Lee, and Warren).

Waldorf: You know, this show's beginning to roll.
Statler: So's the motorbike.
[Gonzo's motorbike falls off the balcony and crashes to the floor. Gonzo pops up below the two men and gasps in terror.]

Lesley Ann Warren's name causes confusion with (fictional) acts that have similarly sounding names (a knife throwing act, a couple of dancing cucumbers, and a trio of guys who claim everyone knows who they are).
