Katie Mitchell is a quirky and aspiring filmmaker in Kentwood, Michigan who often clashes with her nature-obsessed and technophobic father Rick, and has recently been accepted into film school in California. But before she can chase her dreams, an argument puts worries into the rest of the family. So, why not take a little family road trip to patch things up?
As Katie and her family hit the road, technology entrepreneur Mark Bowman gets ready for The Reveal of his latest invention. Unfortunately, this implicates disowning his own AI friend PAL by calling her "obsolete". This move proves to be aggravating for the heartbroken phone, and in revenge, she pulls a rather villainous but an Offscreen Moment of Awesome nonetheless. To kick things off, she hacks the new models, and sends them on a human-capturing spree. She then explains the reasoning behind her Roaring Rampage of Revenge to Mark, who can't stomach the fact that he was responsible for her Face–Heel Turn.
