Recap / The Mask S 1 E 9 Shrink Rap

Go To

Stanley gives his mask to Dr. Neuman who tries it on for himself and becomes a deranged, green headed therapist, who teams up with Pretorius who's planning to nuke the city so he can use the flash of the explosion to photograph an alien race's planet.

Tropes:

  • Affably Evil: Masked Dr. Neuman is insane and psychotic but he is polite and professional which is shown when he sees Stanley again he puts him in therapy session and gives him a wedgie straitjacket along with anyone else he sees showing him not willing to kill people unless he has to and agrees with everyone else that Pretorius is insane even though he teamed up with him anyway.
  • Artistic License – Law Enforcement: Obviously, the plutonium that Pretorius stole would be taken to a much more secure location than just the police's evidence locker once he’s arrested.
  • Ax-Crazy: Masked Dr. Neuman, like The Mask and all the other mask personas is insane, but unlike The Mask, Eve and Masked Peggy Brandt he is psychotic although he does keep his insanity in check unless something ticks him off such as the mention of Stanley Ipkiss or when people tried to stop him from archiving his plans and he takes pleasure in trying to hurt people and shows glee and joy at the thought of Edge City being destroyed, although he does try not to hurt people instead putting them in wedgie straitjackets which makes him different from the other evil mask personas as he tries not to hurt people unlike them but like them he will hurt people if he has to.
  • Berserk Button: Masked Dr. Neuman's is Stanley Ipkiss because of the fact that he annoys him so many times that he named a disorder he calls Ipkissa Maskosis after him because he kept going on about The Mask a lot.
Masked Dr. Neuman: Why do you insist on annoying me, Mr. Ipkiss? (He pops his eyes out which are attached by springs which are also red as well clearly showing the level of annoyance he has at him.)
    Charlie: Ah-ugh, the Mask?
Masked Dr. Neuman: (He clearly shows disappointment at him saying it after putting him through tests while making clock sounds.) A classic case of Ipkissa Maskosis.
Charlie: "Ipkissa Maskosis"? You mean, as in Stanley Ipkiss?
Masked Dr. Neuman: You know him?
Charlie: Sure, he's a pal of mine.
Masked Dr. Neuman: And you did not report into the proper authority? (He blows steam out of his ears literally and bring out a medical tool out) This calls for emergency corrective treatments.
Charlie: What do you have in mind?
Masked Dr. Neuman: I'm gonna remove your brain.
    Charlie: (screams)
(The alarm on Masked Dr Neuman's his watch goes off)
Masked Dr. Neuman: Oh-oh, I almost forgot. I have an appointment at the jailhouse. (puts the medical tool away) I'm afraid we'll have to schedule another session. (puts Charlie in a wedgie straitjacket, then takes out a bouncy stick so that he can use it get to the jailhouse)
  • Cloudcuckoolander:
    • The Mask as usual is this since he decides to turn a missile into a sandwich of all things before swallowing it.
    • Masked Dr. Neuman shows he lives in a world of his own as he thinks the mask does not work even though it does, he also puts a gorilla in a wedgie straitjacket by using diapers to do it which shows that he believes that everyone including animals are suffering from the condition he calls Ipkissa Maskosis then gets convinced that the cosmos are right in front of him spinning around his head after being hit on the head with a mallet by Pretorius.
  • Curiosity Killed the Cast: Dr. Neuman is given the mask by Stanley who wanted to get rid of it so after dealing with Stanley's begging and his dog Milo which he's afraid of, Dr. Neuman agrees to take it with him but however while he's inside his house, he saw that the mask sparkles so out of curiosity he decide to take it close to him which causes it to get attached around his entire head which changes him into a psychotic and insane but polite supervillain who goes on a rampage and teams up with Pretorius.
  • Creepy High-Pitched Voice/ Evil Sounds Deep: Masked Dr. Neuman speaks in a deep voice which shows when he is serious and professional when he talks to others and meeting up with them but when he loses control of his mind, gets excited, takes pleasure in killing someone his voice takes on a high pitched voice which shows him going full on psychotic or gets angry when someone tells him something he does not like to hear or does not want to hear.
  • Contain the Kaboom: The Mask after seeing that cutting all the wires don't seem to work decide to do what he did back before is by swallowing the missile instead though he turns it into a sandwich first.
Mask: Oh, should've left off those green peppers.
  • Continuity Nod: The Mask swallowing a device that will destroy everything in sight is something he did before back in the film when he saves Tina and everyone else at the Coco Bongo.
  • The Comically Serious: Masked Dr. Neuman is Ax-Crazy and a Cloudcuckoolander therapist, but he keeps his usual deadpan, professional demeanor which he mixes with the Mask's cartoony antics and the fact that he still takes himself seriously even if he has gone all loony makes him even more funny to watch.
Masked Dr. Neuman: In short you Mr. Ipkiss are suffering from (he makes a dramatic sound effect.) Ipkissa Maskosis. For your own safety you must be straitjacketed. (He pulls Stanley's pants out which he then uses it to make one along with making a sound like a child would make.) Wedgie. (He smiles as he does it.)
  • Darker and Edgier: Like the two previous episodes this one has Dr. Neuman wearing the mask and he becomes a terrifying, scary, insane and psychotic madman who though still retains cartoonish traits along with having some morals, his politeness and his professionalism decides to team up with Pretorius and help him destroy Edge City which he takes joy in doing it and, tries to kill Stanley when he tries to stop them which while this episode is not as dark as the other two as Masked Dr. Neuman is a saint compered to Masked Pretorius and Skillit it is still one of the darkest episodes of the series.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Masked Dr. Neuman after coming out of the whirlwind decides to ride on a child bicycle then he sees Stanley again after smashing through the wall which he pops his eyes out which are attached by springs then he puts Stanley on a chair while he sits on a chair that has four legs on it then he asks him why does he insist on annoying him which he pops his eyes out again and if you look closely are red that also shows the level of annoyance he has at Stanley then he gets told by him that he is wearing the mask, he denies it saying that he is delusional but he actually shows that he is the one who is by popping his eyes out again along with making his voice high pitched at the same time which shows that Masked Dr. Neuman is insane, polite, professional and psychotic which makes him a dangerous and delusional man who thinks the mask still does not work even though it pretty much is and he also thinks there is a disorder called Ipkissa Maskosis that's making everyone think The Mask is real therefore also showing that Masked Dr. Neuman is misguided as well considering he thinks he needs to save the world before it's too late.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Masked Dr. Neuman retains some morals even though he's insane and psychotic such as agreeing that Pretorius is insane after hearing about his plan from him but he decides to help him anyway because of the fact that he believes there is a disorder callled Ipkissa Maskosis which is causing everyone to believe The Mask is real so he decides that Pretorius's plan is the only way to get rid of it.
  • Extreme Omnivore: When The Mask fails to deactivate the missile Pretorius launched, he comes up with another plan; turn the missile into a giant sandwich, and waits on the ground with the mouth comically wide open.
Mask: That’s right. I'M GONNA EAT IT!
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Subverted when Stanley tries to tell the Masked Dr. Neuman that he has Ipkissa Maskosis in order to stop him from killing him, it didn't work as the latter is a trained psychotherapist to be fooled by such reverse psychology. At least Stanley got him distracted by saying that his fly (zipper from his pants) is open.
  • Laughably Evil: Masked Dr. Neuman, though serious and scary can be funny at times such as riding on a child bicycle, a book and finally a bouncy stick, puts anyone he sees into wedgie straitjackets and can pop his eyes out which are attached by springs and he also can be a little kid at times such as begging Pretorius to tell him about the rest of his plan which Pretorius agrees to tell him and while chasing Stanley he decides to put him in a shower which shows him to be just like The Mask scary and terrifying but still funny at times which shows him to have a sense of humour despite him being serious most of the time.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Masked Dr. Neuman while putting Stanley through therapy gets told by him that he is wearing the mask but he denies it saying that he is not however he pop his eyes out which are attracted by springs and his voice goes high pitched at the same time which proves that he is in denial not Stanley.
Stanley: Dr. Neuman, you're wearing the mask?
Masked Dr. Neuman: Your fantasies about the mask, aren't just hallucinations. (zooms over to Stanley who is sitting on the chair, then he pops his eyes out which are attached by springs then says his next words in a higher pitched voice) Feelings of Persecution, transference and denial.
  • Psycho Psychologist: Dr. Neuman is given the Mask by Stanley who wanted to get rid of it so he begs him to take it with him which he agree to do it, but he then gives in to temptation as he saw it glow so he tries to put it on which it then wraps around his head and turns him into a looney and polite psychotherapist who like him has a deadpan professional demeanor while having the Mask's cartoony antics and humor. Masked Dr. Neuman then goes on a rampage accusing anyone he sees of having Ipkissa Maskosis except Pretorius who then tricks him into thinking that he is like him so Masked Dr. Neuman frees him but does it through protocols showing looney or not, Masked Dr. Neuman still does his job no matter what.
  • Pet the Dog: Masked Dr. Neuman shows himself willing to be a polite and nice man to others despite he's insane and psychotic such as putting everyone in wedgie straitjackets, spares Charlie from lobotomy and also spares a police officer even though she tried to get double clearance on him.
  • Power Cable Attack: Masked Dr. Neuman decide to kill Stanley for good with a electric wire nearby calling it shock therapy though thankfully Milo stops him by bitting on his bottoms which causes Masked Dr. Neuman to do it on himself which causes him to blow up into fireworks which causes him to lose consciousness and his face goes off Dr. Neuman.
Masked Dr. Neuman: I'll cure you for good with a little electric shock therapy. (His voice goes high pitched along with him showing a Slasher Smile, clearly showing he's going to enjoy killing Stanley)
  • Sanity Has Advantages: The Mask is a lot more sane than he appears to be so he does not like anyone who is willing to hurt people or killing them like Pretorius, but Masked Dr. Neuman does not have that as he is a lot more insane than The Mask so while he does agree with everyone that Pretorius is insane, he decides to team up with him and help him destroy Edge City in order to protect everyone from the supposed outbreak of Ipkissa Maskosis.
  • Sexier Alter Ego: Masked Dr. Neuman, unlike his unmasked self's average appearance has a yellow coat, blue trousers, sneakers for shoes, a red and black tie and his hair becomes very much straight up completely, which can make him attractive which is helped by his polite nature towards others even though they are terrified of him.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Despite being insane and psychotic, Masked Dr. Neuman does his job such as when his appointment alarm went off he decide not to do lobotomy on Charlie which he puts him in a wedgie straitjacket and, after hearing about Pretorius's plan he still agrees that he is insane therefore showing that he has morals, even when he decide to team up with him and help him destroy Edge City to get rid of Ipkissa Maskosis, he still goes with his job such as getting him into his custody which after doing that Masked Dr. Neuman wants to know more about his plan, but Pretorius refuses, so since Masked Dr. Neuman is a trained and experienced psychotherapist, he reminds him that he is in his care so Pretorius decide to trick him to get away from him and later on when trying to kill Stanley he gets told by him that he has Ipkissa Maskosis but insane or not, Masked Dr. Neuman as he points out, is trained not to be fooled by reverse psychology so Stanley has to use another way to trick him.
Masked Dr. Neuman: (starts laughing at the fact that Stanley tries to use reverse psychology on him) You think I'll fall for that reverse psychology trick? You forget that I'm a trained psychotherapist.
  • Tempting Fate: Milo uses a plate to tell Stanley what happens if Dr. Neuman puts it on but he tells Milo he never put it on though unfortunately he is proven wrong as Masked Dr. Neuman breaks through the wall and meets Stanley who then put him in therapy and puts him in a Wedgie Straitjacket after doing it.
Stanley: What? Dr. Neuman? Wear the mask? Ha-Ha, don't be ridiculous, Milo. He's not even curious. He'd never put it on in a million years!
(The mask glows while in Dr. Neuman's hands)
Dr. Neuman: Hmm, it sparkles like a Christmas tree.
(Dr. Neuman puts it close to his face, then it wraps itself around his whole head, then does the whirlwind which out of it is Masked Dr. Neuman, who is rising his hands up in the air like he's a football fan)
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: Dr. Neuman is clearly getting tired of having to deal with Stanley and his talks about The Mask which he thinks is not real. He tells the person on the phone that going to the jailhouse will be a relief from having to deal with him then deals with Stanley again outside of his house and he agree to take the mask only mostly so that he will leave him alone. Masked Dr. Neuman asks him why does he insist on annoying his unmasked self, even with his eyes that are attached by springs to be shown with red. Masked Dr. Neuman then sees Stanley trying to stop him and Pretorius from launching the rocket that will destroy Edge City which causes him to growl at the sight of him. Masked Dr. Neuman decides to put an end to it permanently by killing him with an electric wire.
  • Villain Episode: This episode, while focusing on Stanley getting the mask back from Dr. Neuman also focuses on Masked Dr. Neuman as he is trying to cure the world from the disorder he calls Ipkissa Maskosis and shows Masked Dr. Neuman's personality and also how different he is by showing that he has traits of both benevolent and evil mask personas with him being Affably Evil unlike the evil mask personas while also showing he is willing to be a villain as well unlike the benevolent mask personas.
  • Villainous Friendship: Masked Dr. Neuman, though he admits that Pretorius is insane and agrees with everyone about him, also thinks that he and Pretorius are not so different from each other, which is another reason why he agrees to help him and team up with him though it is one-sided as Pretorius thinks he is annoying and is clearly using him as a servant instead of seeing him as a friend.
Masked Dr. Neuman: We're two peas in a pod. The world belongs to us. (goes over to the door, then squeezes his head through the bars to talk to the police officer right outside of the cell) I demand this man be released into my custody immediately.
  • Wedgie:
    • The Mask gives one to Kellaway and Doyle after taking care of Pretorius, then later on does it again to Kellaway along with another police officer who was with him.
    • Masked Dr. Neuman does this only instead of a pants over heads, he does it by turning it into a straitjacket, which shows that like The Mask, he does it so that he does not have to hurt anyone at all, even with Stanley who annoyed him, does it with gorilla which he takes dipers out to make a wedgie straitjacket and after his appointment alarm goes off just as he was about to do lobotomy on Charile he decides put him in a wedgie straitjacket instead which shows that Masked Dr. Neuman can be reasonable but insane and psychotic.
  • Wire Dilemma: Exaggerated and Played for Laughs when The Mask tries to deactivate the missile Pretorius launched to nuke Edge City. Even after not only cutting all the wires, but ripping them all out, the missile is STILL active!
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Dr. Neuman has a pathological fear of dogs, which makes him incredibly uncomfortable around Milo.
  • You're Insane!:
    • Masked Dr. Neuman says this outright to Pretorious after he explains his reasoning for wanting to nuke Edge City… but ultimately subverted when the former decides to join forces with the latter.
    • Stanley indirectly says this regarding Masked Dr. Neuman and Pretorious after overhearing their plan.
Stanley: I take advice from that guy? He's mad! They're both mad!
