Recap / The Mask S 1 E 5 Sister Mask

Go To

Pretorius creates a sister mask to turn Stanley Ipkiss into a living puppet and steal a meteorite.

Tropes:

  • And I Must Scream: Under the control of the Sister Mask, The Mask is fully cognizant of his actions but helpless to prevent the controller from puppeteering him.
  • And This Is for...: Stanley has this moment after getting the sister mask onto Pretorius and bounces him around the room like a pinball.
Stanley: This is for making me kick my dog! […] And this… this is for dashing my hopes of actually being able to control the Mask someday!
  • Artistic License – Law: Stanley Ipkiss would never get away in Real Life with stealing the sister mask from the museum, even if Pretorius planted it there.
  • Big "NO!": Pretorius lets one out when turned into a soccer ball.
  • Blatant Lies: Pretorius claims to Mask in his lab he is not evil who serves as the main antagonist of the series.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Double Subverted. Pretorius insists that he’s not evil, just that he has a Morally Ambiguous Doctorate because he doesn’t mind that his work as a "chaos theorist" puts innocent lives in danger. Once he wears the Mask, he gains the clarity to realize that he is an evil scientist after all.
  • Chase Scene: A much Darker and Edgier version, with the Giant Spider version of Pretorius trying to kill Stanley and Peggy.
  • Combat Tentacles: When Pretorius wears the Mask, these come out of his head as he tries to eat Peggy and Stanley.
  • Darker and Edgier: While the series has had some dark episodes, this is undoubtedly one of the darkest. The next episode was equally as dark, and three episodes later we get a Breather Episode.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Peggy has her moments especially at the Edge City museum.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Pretorius had no idea that his sister mask would be used against him when he asked Stanley Ipkiss/The Mask to Kick the Dog.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: It seems as though, although the Sister Mask is evil, The Mask will not hurt children or soldiers, even when Pretorius tries to control him this way.
  • Everyone Has Standards: When Pretorius tries to control the Mask into killing Peggy, he has this to say.
Mask: Hey Pretorious, I hate the press too, but this seems a little extreme!
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: Milo could tell from the start that the Sister Mask wasn't what it seemed, as he immediately started growling and chewing on it. Stanley unfortunately ignored this, kickstarting the episode's conflict.
  • The Fantastic Faux: Though a team of such never actually comes to be, Pretorius wants the meteor fragments to give his minions powers so he can make one "just like in the comic book."
  • Floating Advice Reminder: A rather literal one; Stanley Ipkiss/The Mask sees Pretorius as a hallucination from The Mask when he has put it on, just to inform him that Pretorius is in control.
  • For Science!: The sole motivation of Pretorius this episode is to gain a meteorite with unusual properties.
  • Giant Spider: When Pretorius gets the mask on, he becomes one.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: As The Mask, Pretorius's has this, which are also Red Eyes, Take Warning because of his original red eyes.
  • Heroic Willpower: Stanley Ipkiss tries to resist the sister mask, and it works in so far as The Mask is refusing to hurt or kill people.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Pretorius ended up getting the Sister Mask put onto him resulting in him being turned into a soccer ball.
  • Interchangeable Asian Cultures: The Mask briefly addresses Walter as Walt-san when they are fighting, despite using kung fu against him in a Chinese restaurant.
  • Kick the Dog: When Pretorius had control of the Mask, he made the Mask kick Milo. Stanley wasn't happy about that, and when he got his revenge, he turned the Sister Mask on Pretorius, made him become a soccer ball and then made him kick around his robot body and his own henchmen. He even nearly calls out this trope word-for-word:
Stanley: This for making me kick my dog!
  • Mind-Control Device: The sole aim of the sister mask was to be used to control someone's movements.
  • Minimalist Cast: No new Villain of the Week in this episode, just Stanley Ipkiss/The Mask, Peggy Brandt, Milo the Dog and Pretorius and his henchmen.
  • Mythology Gag: During the Chase Scene, Peggy refers to Pretorius as "Big Head", a reference to the original comic-book version of The Mask.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: Pretorius specifically seeks to use The Mask’s invulnerability to get past the military security.
  • Nightmare Face: Pretorius wearing the Mask is creepy as hell.
  • People Puppets: The intent of the Sister Mask was so Pretorius could remote-control Stanley Ipkiss/The Mask's movements.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: As The Mask, Pretorius's red eyes get mixed with Glowing Eyes of Doom.
  • Shout-Out: The meteor fragments Pretorius seeks give the same powers as the team from the Fantastic Four comics, a fact Pretorius lampshades.
  • Story-Breaker Power: Zig-zagged. Although the Sister Mask could be one in theory, due to the Heroic Willpower of Stanley Ipkiss as The Mask, it prevents it from being too much of a story-breaker power.
  • Papa Wolf: Stanley and The Mask care a lot about Milo and let’s just say that Pretorius regrets ever making them hurt Milo.
  • The Sociopath: Pretorius notes, while in his form as The Mask, that he has no limits, and his Mask persona reflects this.
  • Villain Episode: Although Stanley plays a role in this episode, it's focused around Pretorius' use of the sister mask to control him.
