Recap / The Mask S 1 E 14 Santa Mask

Go To

In this Christmas Episode, Santa is framed for committing crimes after Kablamus, Walter, and the Terrible Twos begin disguising themselves as Santa Claus and rampaging through Edge City. Can Stanley (and The Mask) save Christmas by clearing the jolly red guy's name?

Tropes:

  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Stanley meets up with a guy who said that he's Santa Claus but doesn't believe him despite the fact that he has a mask that is magical and turns him into a green headed man named The Mask.
  • Friend to All Children: The Mask as always is this as a kid tells him he wanted a horse for Christmas which she told Santa about it at the store. The Mask, feeling awkward since he's only pretending to be Santa so he has no idea about the meeting between them, decides to give her a real horse to make up for it, showing just how much The Mask cares about the children's happiness.
    Girl: Santa?
Mask: No the Tooth Fairy. [creak thud] I'm just kiddin', kiddo so tell me.. what do you want for Christmas?
Girl: Uh i already told you when I sat on your lap at the department store.
Mask: You did? [going Oh, Crap!]
    Girl: Don't you remember Santa?
Mask: Well of co-o-ourse [deciding to play along with it so the girl doesn't get upset] Refresh my memory.
Girl: I asked for a rocking horse. Is that a problem?
Mask: C'mon do I look like a cut rate Santa to you? Think about it. Rocking horses are kids stuff.
Girl: Well in case you haven't noticed, I'm a kid!
Mask: What you need is the real thing! [A horse neighs outside]
    Girl: A horsey!
Mask: A race horsey. [clearly happy that he found a way to cheer her up after the awkwardness between them]
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: The Mask shows himself to care about everyone's happiness as he is willing to save Christmas from being ruined. Santa says this very much about him.
Santa: If someone could fill in for me. Somebody pure of heart.
Stanley: Pure is good, I really..
Santa: Somebody noble [Referring to him and his alter ego The Mask, who has his moments]
  • Saving Christmas: The Mask has to clear Santa Claus's name along with stopping the villains as well.
  • The Scrooge:
    • Stanley is this considering he is not a big fan of Christmas but however he decide to put on the mask of Loki so that his alter ego The Mask can save Christmas from being ruined.
Stanley: Charlie. Charlie. I don't want to be Santa.
Charlie: Ease up, Stanley Claus it's almost Christmas Eve. Where is your Christmas Spirit?
Stanley: It got frost bite over an hour ago.
    • Kellaway is also this, due to having stopped believing in Santa Claus when he was 5 years old. He wanted a toy train, Captain Choo-Choo, for Christmas, but never got it. This leads to a sweet moment at the end of the episode, however, when he finds a Captain Choo-Choo on his desk Christmas Morning, left by the real Santa.
  • Skewed Priorities: Zigzagged. The Mask does focus a lot more than usual on getting Santa Claus’s name clear and while he does succeed in getting one present to a little girl, he then ends up dealing with Kellaway and Doyle, Pretorius and the villains impersonating Santa Claus which does get The Mask having not delivering the rest of the presents to all the children but he does manage to get Santa Claus’s name clear and saved Christmas in the end showing just how much determined The Mask is in getting all the children cheerful and happy.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: The Mask as usual turns himself into Santa Claus so that he can deliver presents to children around the world without them knowing what has happened to the real one then turns himself into the ghost of christmas past. Later on he turns himself into little boy who is a drummer, the grim reaper, a drill sergeant, a Mexican musician and a stage actor.
