"Teachers' Union"

  • Acrofatic: Coach proves to be surprisingly agile while chasing Lincoln and Clyde.
  • Basement-Dweller: Coach Pacowski's revealed to still live with his mother (who lives on a houseboat).
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Lincoln's class hates playing dodgeball.
    • Coach Pacowski having a crush on Mrs. Johnson.
    • Lori turns her bed into a fort when Lincoln wants girl advice.
    • Lincoln and Clyde refer to themselves as "Clincoln McLoud".
  • Disproportionate Retribution: After the date between Mrs. Johnson and Coach Pacowski goes sour, Lincoln and Clyde admit to setting the whole thing up to the latter. Coach Pacowski compliments the boys for coming clean, but he becomes so angry that he threatens to tear them apart. It's a wonder he doesn't get fired for it or worse, sent to mental health therapy.
  • Dodgeball Is Hell: The episode opens with Lincoln's class playing dodgeball. They get knocked out cold by the balls left and right.
  • Gross-Up Close-Up: Done when Coach Pacowski takes off his sock to show the reason he got a medical book from the library. Thankfully, the sole of his foot isn't seen, just some rather gross looking mildew on the side.
  • Gym Class Hell: Coach Pacowski's obstacle course is what makes Lincoln and Clyde start the plot of the episode.
  • Gym Class Rope Climb: Rope climbing is part of Coach Pacowski’s obstacle course. Rusty ends up with severe rope burns because of it, and needs to have his hands bandaged.
  • Head Desk: Coach Pacowski can be seen doing this the day after his date with Mrs. Johnson went sour.
  • Here We Go Again!: When Mrs. Johnson calms down when she sees the janitor, Lincoln hides beneath his desk to ask Lori for advice again.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Coach Pacowski ends up getting injured while chasing Lincoln and Clyde across the obstacle course he himself made.
  • I Have This Friend: How Lincoln gets Lori to give him girl advice. Lori keeps assuming he's using this, when in fact he really is talking about someone else.
  • Lampshade Hanging: When seeing the dangerous obstacle course, Girl Jordan asks Coach Pacowski if it’s even legal to have barb wire in school. He responds by making her go first.
  • The Matchmaker: Lincoln and Clyde act as matchmakers between Coach Pacowski and Mrs. Johnson. By the end of the episode, they intend to do the same for Mrs. Johnson and the janitor.
  • Right Out of My Clothes: During the game of dodgeball, Clyde gets hit by a ball and it knocks his clothes off, leaving him in his boxers.
  • Running Gag: Lori thinks the girl advice she gives Lincoln is for him.
  • Sadist Teacher:
    • Coach Pacowski makes the class run the obstacle course, which includes barbed wire and a crushing block. Then later, Lincoln and Clyde confess to Coach Pacowski as to why his date with Mrs. Johnson went bad and he threatens to tear them apart.
    • Mrs. Johnson, briefly, when she angrily makes the class take a pop quiz after her lousy date.
  • Shipper with an Agenda: The main reason Clyde and Lincoln try to get Mrs. Johnson and Coach Pacowski together is because they hope the latter will go easy on them during gym class once he and Mrs. Johnson are a couple.
  • Staging the Eavesdrop: To get Mrs. Johnson interested in Coach Pacowski, Clyde and Lincoln sit close to her during lunch and start discussing the good qualities they discovered about him, loud enough for her to hear. Later, they use the same trick on Coach Pacowski, by talking about how nobody asked Mrs. Johnson out on National Ask a Teacher Out Day while he is within hearing range.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: After injuring himself chasing Lincoln and Clyde on the obstacle course, Coach Pacowski finds love in the school nurse, who shares his love of mini golf.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Coach Pacowski chases Clyde and Lincoln around the gym with the intention of tearing them apart after they tell him the truth.

"Head Poet's Anxiety"

  • Apologetic Attacker: In order to help Lucy build up a thick skin against criticism, Luan has her read her poems in front of her siblings, and insists that they criticize her. Excluding Lola, all of them clearly don’t like it. Leni even states she doesn’t want to do this.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For Luan and Lucy.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Lucy reads a poem about death to senior citizens. After realizing her mistake, she reads a poem about Pop Pop.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Luan becomes jealous when Lucy reveals that she has been chosen to read her poetry at the Royal Woods Theater.
  • The Heckler: Luan ropes her siblings to be this for Lucy in order to maintain thick skin. Lola ends up taking this up to eleven.
  • Jerkass Realization: Luan, when she sees Lucy is faking illness to keep herself from stealing Luan's dream.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Luan. Usually she is seen as a sadistic and cruel comedian, but here she is not only moved by Lucy's situation, but is willing to help her achieve her goal. But it is only for Lucy's star to shine brighter than Luan's for Luan to manifest her sadistic side again.
  • Literal-Minded: Clyde, when Luan tells him and Lincoln about her new gig:
Luan: Today the Giggling Geezer, tomorrow the Royal Woods Theater.
Clyde: Tomorrow? Can we still get tickets?
  • Most Writers Are Writers: By using Luan as an Author Avatar, this episode could easily be interpreted as the author's way of helping new artists getting started.
  • Mirthless Laughter: Lucy while accompanying Luan on the Giggling Geezer, waiting her turn to perform.
  • Playing Sick: Lucy in order to get out of having to perform at the Royal Woods Theater, and thus ruin Luan’s dream.
  • Produce Pelting: In a flashback, young Luan got pelted with curly fries when giving a bad performance at the bowling alley.
  • Running Gag:
  • Surpassed the Teacher: In this episode, Luan becomes Lucy’s mentor. It works so well that the latter gets invited to perform at the Royal Woods Theater, something the former has been trying and failing to do for years.
  • Tragic Dream: Luan loses her dream because of Lucy becoming the youngest person to perform at the Royal Woods Theater instead of her.
  • Urine Trouble: In a flashback, Charles urinates on young Luan after she performed stand-up comedy for his and the other pets’ birthday. May also count as Excrement Statement.
  • When She Smiles: Lucy actually smiles in this episode. It's so rare Lynn Sr. immediately asks Rita to get the camera.
  • Whoopee Cushion: Luan uses one against Clyde, placing it on his bike saddle when he wasn't looking.
