Lady Galadriel and Halbrand are welcomed to the splendor of Númenor, which introduces new players and a lineage of captains who will one day change the world. The Harfoots reckon with their ancient traditions and Nori's secret risks being exposed. In the Southlands, Arondir toils under captivity as he tries to escape and understand who is the elusive figure the Orcs call "Adar".

  • Adaptational Ugliness: The warg the orcs sic on the prisoners is by far the ugliest live-action version to date, looking more like a bug-eyed chihuahua than a wolf or hyena.
  • Adapted Out: Amandil, Elendil's father (and thus Isildur's grandfather) is seemingly absent from his family tree or already dead.
  • Affectionate Pickpocket: Halbrand does it twice.
    • He gives Elendil some Snarking Thanks and hugs him pretending to be very grateful for his service. What Halbrand did in fact, was to steal Galadriel's dagger and give it back to her for some unknown reasons.
    • Next, he offers to pay for everyone's drinks at a pub just to get the chance of stealing a smith guild crest.
  • All for Nothing: After all the efforts and death for at least one of them to get out and ask for help, Revion is killed just as he escapes.
  • As You Know: Galadriel explains to Halbrand the history of Númenor and their relationship with the Elves. The ancestors of the Númenorians stood up against Morgoth and were gifted the island by the Valar. They used to trade knowledge with the Elves, but in time, they cut ties with them, which greatly upsets Galadriel.
  • Attack Animal: The orcs put their warg to attack the prisoners who try to escape.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Earien believes she is the one greeted by her brother when he comment "there you are". He goes instead and hugs his horse.
  • Bait the Dog: An orc captain expresses admiration toward the elves standing their ground and refusing to cut down a tree, offering a water ration to three of them as they propose to work around it. While it initially seems to be a surprisingly noble gesture, the captain slits Medhor's throat while he's in the middle of taking a drink, killing him. To add insult to injury, he forces Arondir to cut the tree down anyway.
  • Born Under the Sail: Major focus is given to Númenor's status as a maritime culture, and Isildur in particular seems very troubled by Númenor's (relatively recent) isolationism.
  • Character Title: "Adar" is the name or at least alias of the orcs' commander who shows up in the last seconds of the episode.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: The warg kills a couple people in a graphic manner.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: In a tribute held to commemorate all the deceased ones, Sadoc mentions that Poppy lost all her family in a landslide.
  • The Dead Have Names: The Harfoots hold a ceremony the night before the Migration during which Sadoc reads out the names of those who "fell behind" in prior Migrations. Among the names is Poppy's entire family who were lost to a landslide.
  • Deadpan Snarker:
    • Poppy always has the right comeback.
    Nori: There's head-sense, Poppy, and there's heart-sense.
Poppy: There's common sense and nonsense.
    • Ar-Pharazon shows his wits of a politician while dealing with Galadriel.
  • Decade Dissonance: Halbrand notices there is a huge technological and cultural difference between the advanced Númenor and the race of the Men in Middle-earth, who now go through The Dark Ages, have no large cities and live in dirty towns built of wood only.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Medhor's throat is slit by one of the orcs and he ends up dying in Arondir's arms.
  • Foreshadowing: When meeting Queen Miriel, Halbrand displays some knowledge of royal etiquette such as kneeling despite the fact the Southlands have not had a king since at least the last age.
  • Full-Name Ultimatum: Marigold admonishes Nori for hiding the Stranger by calling her "Elanor Kellamark Brandyfoot!"
  • Funny Background Event: Isildur getting up from the table and leaving without saying a word while Elendil discuses with Earien.
  • Give Me Back My Wallet: The man Halbrand tried to bribe with free drinks realized he was robbed of his guild crest. He and his other friends try to teach Halbrand a lesson but end up Curb Stomped by Halbrand.
  • Hope Spot: The captive elves rebel and try to break their chains so they can escape and warn the other elves of the orc threat. They have initial success but then most are killed by the orcs and a warg. Revion is able to break his chain and makes a run for it. Arondir is still chained and about to die but knows that their sacrifice will save countless lives. Then he sees Revion turn around with an arrow sticking out of his chest. Revion is hit by more arrows and falls down dead. The escape plan was doomed to failure from the beginning.
  • Impairment Shot: The episode opens with Arondir being paraded by Orcs. The camera shots are wobbling wildly, as Arondir is too dizzy to sit on his own.
  • Indy Ploy: Nori is lucky that Poppy is such a quick thinker, if it weren't for Poppy keeping Sadoc distracted, she would have been caught stealing a few pages from Sadoc's book. Poppy guides Nori's hand to the map while she hides under the table, and keeps Sadoc talking at the same time.
  • Internal Reveal: The rest of the Harfoots find the Stranger and learn of Nori's involvement in his presence.
  • I Will Only Slow You Down: A key law of the Harfoots is that anyone who falls behind in a migration is left behind, to try to catch up to the best of their ability later or die on their own, as slowing the migration to help stragglers could endanger the entire community. Nori's punishment for taking in the Stranger is to get her family placed last in the migration — the place most likely to end up as a straggler who gets left behind. With her father's broken foot, Nori's family finds themselves facing a death sentence... until Nori finds a loophole in getting the Stranger to pull her family's wagon.
  • King Incognito: Halbrand is not just a commoner, he has the royal blood of the kings who sided with Morgoth.
  • Kneel Before Zod: Subverted, because no one kneels in Numenor.
  • Landmark of Lore: The Hall of Lore, a castle situated on an isolated promontory, that contains an ancient library of tomes and scrolls.
  • Lessons in Sophistication: Halbrand advises Galadriel to kneel in front of Miiriel, but she stops them, stating they dont have such habits there.
  • Made a Slave: It is revealed that the captured villagers — as well as several of the elves who stood guard over the Southlands, such as Revion from the first episode — have been captured by orcs and are being forced to dig tunnels. Revion and Arondir attempt to rally the elves to escape, but they're all killed save for Arondir.
  • Map All Along: Sauron's mark that he left on Finrod's body and in fortress of the Northern Wastelands, turns out to be a map of the Southlands.
  • Meaningful Look:
    • While being escorted through the city, Halbrand looked intently at a blacksmith doing his work.
    • When the guard sees Galadriel, his face just drops down and backs up, allowing her, Halbrand and Elendil to pass and talk with queen Miriel.
    • Numenorians are very displeased to see an Elf on their shores.
    • Miriel and Ar-Pharazon just starring at each other after hearing Galadriel's demands to ship her away to Middle-Earth. Their expressions are really screaming "is she serious".
  • Meaningful Name: "Elendil" means both "one who loves the stars" and "elf-friend".
  • The Needs of the Many: On the surface, the Harfoots are a cutesy people who live a charmed, bucolic life, though this belies the fact that their culture is surprisingly harsh on those who would slow down their regular migrations, and any Harfoot that can’t keep up is abandoned in the name of ensuring the survival of the group.
  • Mythology Gag: The large statue at the entrance of the harbor is of Eärendil the Mariner, the father of Elros and Elrond. Just off to his side is his wife Elwing in her bird form.
  • Non-Indicative Name: The episode is called "Adar", but the character by that name only barely appears in the last seconds of the video.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • Isildur was involved in an incident where he got into a scrap with Queen's guard and Elendil had to convince the sail-master that Isildur was up to the task to become a sailor.
    • Nori threatens Poppy that if she doesn't help her with the Meteor Man, she is going to tell Malva that Poppy put fireweed in her toe cream.
  • One Degree of Separation: Galadriel's best friend (Elrond) happens to also be the twin brother of the founder of Númenor, Elros. Elendil points out how fitting this is.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Galadriel's rash, belligerent approach to Queen Regent Miriel very nearly gets her and Halbrand executed. Luckily Halbrand smooths things over.
  • Portal Statue Pairs: The entrance to the city is via a bridge whose pillars are formed of two gigantic statues.
  • The Reveal: Several:
    • The orcs have a leader they call Adar, who they speak about in almost reverent tones — who Arondir believes may be Sauron himself.
    • Sauron's sigil is actually a map pointing to Tirharad, the future Mordor, and ancient records reveal that settling there was a fallback plan in case Morgoth should ever perish, so that evil could thrive in a new realm. Notably Sauron had apparently chosen the location a long time ago since Finrod had the symbol branded on his body.
    • Halbrand is the descendant of the King of Southlands — but the said king was a servant of Morgoth.
  • Sadistic Choice: For Woodland Elves, being forced to cut down a tree is this. Arondir takes the responsibility upon himself just to avoid more death.
  • Scenery Porn: Númenor is a beautiful place and this episode really wants you to know it.
  • Second Love: Largo was in love with another Harfoot, called Rose (who is hinted to have died), before meeting his current wife, Marigold.
  • Shipped in Shackles: The Elves and the villagers are legcuffed by the orcs.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Galadriel comes off as entitled to Númenorians after she listed all her titles and demanded on an authoritative tone to be transported to Middle-earth immediately, despite knowing the Númenorians don't like having Elves on their shores. She may be an important person in Middle-earth, but no so much to the Númenorians.
Galadriel: I will not be made a prisoner.
Ar-Pharazôn: I would sooner knee-cap a stallion than seek to imprison the mighty commander of the Northern Armies. [whole crowd laughs]
  • Snarking Thanks: Halbrand wants to show his gratitude to Elendil for saving his life and hugs Elendil. Halbrand is also lying and only wants to steal Galadriel's knife from him.
  • Starting a New Life: Halbrand sees in Númenor a new chance to start from zero after his old life was destroyed by orcs. He asks everywhere for a chance to become a blacksmith, but is refused for not having a guild crest.
  • Stealth Expert: Galadriel can sneak on anyone, except Elendil.
  • The Social Expert: Halbrand shows his smooth talking talents by deflecting a possible conflict between Galadriel and the Númenorian Aristocracy. He proposes for everyone to take a few days to think about Galadriel's request of leaving Númenor as soon as possible. They accept his offer.
  • There Are No Coincidences: After Galadriel finds out who Halbrand really is, she is convinced that it was no coincidence that they run into each other but part of a grander design.
  • A Taste of the Lash: The orcs are shown whipping the enslaved villagers in a graphic manner.
  • Throwing Your Sword Always Works: One of the people enslaved by the orcs, a woman, dies after an orc throws a hatchet in her back while trying to escape.
  • Try to Fit That on a Business Card: Galadriel's introduction of herself:
Galadriel: Galadriel of the Noldor. Daughter of the Golden House of Finarfin. Commander of the Northern Armies of High King Gil-Galad.
  • Vapor Wear: Not obvious in this episode, but implied with Galadriel. In the previous episode, she swam through the ocean in a thin white gown, revealing nothing underneath. She arrives in Numenor in the same outfit. Though dry and opaque by this point, one can infer that she walked through the busy city and had an audience with Queen Miriel while going commando.
  • Weakened by the Light: The Orcs are injured by direct sunlight, which is why they have a huge canopy over their camp, and wear hoods when going outside it after sunrise.
  • White Stallion: Galadriel receives a white horse from Elendil to ride to the Hall of Lore in Numenor.
