Recap / The Looney Tunes Show S2 E11 "We're in Big Truffle"

Go To

The eleventh episode of the second season of The Looney Tunes Show.

Daffy drags Porky into the woods to hunt for truffles so he can make a handsome profit. Meanwhile, Bugs and Lola babysit Gossamer for Witch Lezah when she goes to the Witch's Convention, but Lola accidentally transforms Gossamer when she mistakes Lezah's spell book for a book of bedtime stories.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Acrophobic Bird: Daffy's not being able to fly is lampshaded by Porky... and further lampshaded when it turns out that he can't SWIM, either.
Porky: You can't FLY, you can't SWIM... ARE YOU EVEN A D-D-D-DUCK AT ALL?!
Daffy: I'm not sure. This comes off very easily. [He casually takes his beak off of his face]
  • Babysitting Episode: The B-plot of this episode involves Bugs and Lola babysitting Gossamer for Witch Lezah while she goes to the Witch's Convention in the fifth dimension.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • When going into Speedy's mousehole to get Gossamer, Mac and Tosh scream in horror and assure Bugs and Lola that they'll fix everything. It turns out they're reacting to Speedy's belongings, and they intend to redecorate.
    • After Porky learns the bear is actually Gossamer, Daffy returns home wearing a coat made of bear fur. It's actually synthetic clothing he bought at a nearby store, with the transformed Gossamer just sitting on the porch.
  • Bears Are Bad News: Subverted. Lola accidentally reads a magic spell that turns Gossamer into a bear, and he gets loose into the woods. He ends running into Daffy and Porky, and it's played this way, but it turns out that Gossamer was fully aware of everything and was simply staying near two adults he knew.
  • Brick Joke: When Bugs gets Mac and Tosh to look for the frog he and Lola think is a transformed Gossamer in Speedy's mousehole, the two gophers decide to redecorate it. In the epilogue, Speedy returns to his mouse hole, and when he sees what the gophers did to it, he says "What the? Am I on some kind of reality show?"
  • Cassandra Truth: Everyone Bugs tries to call about the situation about a transformed Gossamer don't believe him.
  • Delicious Distraction: While Taz chases the frog that Bugs and Lola think is a transformed Gossamer, he takes a brief pause from his chase to steal a steak from Yosemite Sam's barbecue grill.
  • Freudian Slip: After Daffy and Porky spend the night in a tree to evade the bear.
Daffy: Is the truffle okay? I mean, are you okay?
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: When Porky falls into some rapids, Daffy holds out a branch for him to grab, but since Porky is still holding on to the rare truffle they found, he starts to lose his grip. Daffy tells him to drop the truffle.
    Porky: A-are you sure?
Daffy: I'm not gonna say it twice! I can't believe I said it once!
  • Funny Background Event: As Lezah calls Bugs to tell her she's coming home, saying the convention is dull as usual, an octopus can be seen emerging from a cauldron, trapping several witches in its tentacles.
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: It turns out that Porky only wears a jacket because he doesn't want to spend the money on a shirt and pants. Daffy is incredulous that this is all a matter of cheapness.
  • Here We Go Again!: At the end of the episode, Daffy finds out from Speedy that the truffle he and Porky found wasn't actually a truffle, but rather an old, dirty potato, and that real truffles are generally only found in Italy and France. He then asks Porky if he'd like to take a trip to either of those countries.
  • Hypocritical Humor: In response to criticism of being a Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal, Porky points out that Daffy is completely naked and asks what his excuse is. Daffy says he is proud of his body and likes to flaunt it.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Downplayed with Bugs since it doesn't happen often, but whenever he interacts with Witch Lezah, he tends to bring up witch stereotypes that she immediately shoots down, reminiscent of someone asking slightly racist questions out of ignorance rather than malice. This episode's B-plot where Lezah asks him to babysit Gossamer is a prime example.
    Bugs: Where are you going?
    Lezah: The fifth dimension.
Bugs: Oh. Uh, is that where you're from?
Lezah: What!? Honey, I'm from Chicago! The fifth dimension is where they're holding the Witch's Convention. They teach you all the new spells and broom tricks.
Bugs: Sounds great. We'll take good care of him.
Lezah: "We"? Oh. I forgot about Daffy. Any chance you could babysit at my house?
Bugs: Oooh, I've never stayed at a haunted house before.
Lezah: It's not haunted! You make a lot of assumptions.
  • Mistaken for Prank Call:
    • When Bugs calls Speedy to tell him that Gossamer went inside his mousehole and he has to come home to get him out, Speedy asks Bugs how Gossamer could fit in a mousehole, since he's giant. When Bugs tells him that Lola turned Gossamer into a frog, Speedy doesn't believe Bugs, and thinks that he is prank-calling him.
    • Later, when Bugs finds out that Lola turned Gossamer into a bear instead of a frog, he calls the Department of Missing Children to tell them this. The department naturally doesn't believe him, and he says "I'll just hang up on myself."
  • Mood Whiplash: Daffy saves Porky rather than the truffle, saying it feels good to put others before himself. Daffy then says he doubts this feeling will last longer than the money he would've gotten from the truffle, so he dives back in after it.
  • Mythology Gag: When Porky questions if Daffy is even a duck after Daffy tells him he can't fly or swim, Daffy responds by claiming that he doesn't know, before pointing out that his beak comes off rather easily, which he shows by removing it. This is a nod to the iconic Hunting Season trilogy, where Daffy's beak would change place and even be removed due to Elmer Fudd shooting him in the face.
  • Oblivious Transformation: Lola trying to use the spellbook some more accidentally makes Bugs one-eyed, two-horned, and bat winged with purple fur. Bugs is completely oblivious to this and is changed back without ever realizing what happened.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story:
    • When Lola finally manages to reverse the spell that turns things into frogs, it turns out that the frog wasn't Gossamer, but rather his alarm clock. This gets her to realize that she turned Gossamer into the bear, and she and Bugs should have been chasing the bear all along.
    • At the end of the episode, it is revealed that the truffle that Daffy and Porky found wasn't a truffle, but rather an old, dirty potato, and truffles are generally only found in Italy and France.
