Recap / The Looney Tunes Show S 1 E 7 Casa De Calma

Go To

The seventh episode of the first season of The Looney Tunes Show.

Bugs and Daffy go on vacation and Daffy is put through the wringer attempting to attract the attention a famous actress.

This episode features the Merrie Melodies song "Queso Bandito", and the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote short "Sail Fail."

This episode provides examples of:

  • Amusing Injuries: Very much in line with the more classic Looney Tunes cartoons, Daffy suffers a lot from that when constantly punched in the face by Starlett's bodyguard. Or when he jumps from the diving board into a now empty pool.
  • Art Shift: The majority of the storyline was done prior to the show's retool into a sitcom, thus has a slightly different style than the other episodes. The sequence where Bugs and Daffy go golfing, however, appears to have been added after the retool, so the characters look more in line with the designs in the rest of the show.
  • Artistic License – Biology: The alligator that eats Daffy has an underbite rather than an overbite.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Bugs is directly speaking to the audience after Daffy rudely pushes him into the pool.
Bugs: Do you think I should let that one slide? - Yeah, me neither.
  • Butt-Monkey: Daffy really gets it in this episode especially
  • Cartoon Cheese: All the cheese shown in the "Queso Bandito" Merrie Melodies music video look like yellow Swiss. It gets jarring when Speedy Gonzales mentions more specific cheese kinds as cheddar, Monterey Jack, and blended while holding up the stereotypical cheese each name-dropping.
  • Doorstop Baby: Bugs leaves Daffy (turned into a baby because of a prolonged mineral bath) on the doorstep of some of Daffy's hick relatives.
  • Empty Swimming Pool Dive: Bugs drains the pool during Daffy's attempted high dive, smashing him into the ground of the pool.
  • Formula-Breaking Episode: This episode was originally produced as a pilot for a Looney Tunes series called Laff Riot. As such, the character designs are slightly different than the rest of the show and it's much more focused on slapstick than foibles of suburban life.
  • Fountain of Youth: Daffy spends so much time in the rejuvenating mineral bath that he reverts to a duckling.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Joe turns out to short for Josephine. Also, Leslie turns out to be a very large and strong man, cue the Miserable Massage for Daffy when he tries to switch.
  • Just Like Robin Hood: Speedy Gonzales a.k.a. "Queso Bandito" in the Merry Melody short steals cheese from mice that have a lot and gives it to poor mice.
  • Miserable Massage: When Daffy and Bugs are waiting for their massages, Daffy notices he’s waiting on “Joe” while Bugs is waiting for “Leslie”. He makes Bugs switch places with him thinking that he’s getting an attractive masseuse. Said attractive masseuse is “Joe” (short for Josephine) and she gives Bugs a pleasant massage. “Leslie” turns out to be a large man who gives Daffy such a painful massage that he suffers from a sore back.
  • Never Smile at a Crocodile: Daffy ends up in a golf course water hazard, one that happens to be inhabited by an alligator which eats him.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: The actress Starlett Johansson is an obvious riff on Scarlett Johansson.
  • Running Gag: Bugs walking away with the actress and Daffy taking hits from her bodyguard.
  • Shout-Out: The Mary Higgins Clark book Bugs reads in this episode is titled My Gal Thursday, a parody of her real-life book My Gal Sunday.
  • Tightrope Walking: While parasailing, Daffy insults the actress, which prompts her bodyguard to ride a jetski to Bugs' boat, walk on the rope and punch Daffy yet again.
  • Would Not Hurt A Child: Though the bodyguard would put a pacifier in a baby's mouth to keep them quiet.
Daffy: "Even you wouldn't hit a baby" (cue the pacifier)
  • Zorro Mark: In the "Queso Bandito" Merrie Melodies music video, Speedy leaves 'S's behind after his cheese thefts.
