Recap / The Looney Tunes Show S1 E13 "To Bowl or Not to Bowl"

Go To

The thirteenth episode of the first season of The Looney Tunes Show.

Daffy enters a bowling tournament with his friends to spite a rival bowling team. After Porky is horribly injured during the training, Bugs replaces him on the team.

This episode features the "Yellow Bird" Merrie Melodies music video and the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote short, "Vicious Cycles".

This episode provides examples of:

  • Always Someone Better: This is how Daffy feels about Bugs in general and also is the reason why he choose to lie to both Bugs and his other friends: to keep Bugs from taking over the Bowling team and staying in the spotlight.
  • Bowling for Ratings: Daffy and his friends form their own bowling team called Daffy's Ducks in this episode, and Bugs takes Porky's place on the team when Porky gets horribly injured.
  • Brick Joke: Granny very much takes her time on her first bowl. She's still there hours after the tournament ends and gets a strike when she finally bowls.
  • Character Name Limits: The names that Daffy enters into the scoreboard end up being shortened to the first three letters, causing them to all appear as "THE"note . When he enters his own name as "Poobah the Grand", it shows up as "POO".
Daffy: Porky, I changed my mind. You're player 4.
  • Epic Fail: Daffy is tied with the Lucky Strikers in the bowling tournament, and is merely two pins away from winning. He first gets a gutter ball, is given a free turn due to a technicality, then gets another gutter ball. He's so mortified by his embarrassing loss that he stands motionless in the bowling alley all night.
  • Full Moon Silhouette: In the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote short, "Vicious Cycles", Wile E. chases Road Runner on some motorcyles he borrows from Chuck's Roadhouse. At one point, he flies past the moon, and an airplane flies into him.
  • Game-Breaking Injury: Daffy's training ends up hospitalizing Porky.
  • More Popular Replacement: In-Universe; Bugs is very well-liked by Daffy's teammates, to the point where Pete considers making him the team captain.
  • Mythology Gag: In the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote short, "Vicious Cycles", the tavern that Wile E. borrows the motorcycles from is called Chuck's Roadhouse.
  • Papa Wolf: In the "Yellow Bird" Merrie Melodies music video, Crusher beats the tar out of Sylvester for ruining his daughter's sandcastle.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Daffy's Ducks end up losing the tournament.
  • Training from Hell: Daffy's unusual regiment involves using Porky as the ball so that he "truly understands the bowling ball". It goes well.
