Recap / The Lion Guard S3 E18 "Journey to the Pride Lands"

Go To

After learning that the Pride Lands are threatened, Kion uses the Roar to help the Lion Guard return home as soon as possible.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • An Aesop: No matter how capable you are, there are some things where you'll still need help and that's okay.
  • Boring Return Journey: Thanks to Kion’s newly mastered Roar powers, the group can take a multitude of time saving shortcuts back to the Pridelands.
  • But Now I Must Go: Kion and the Guard consider accepting Rani's offer to stay, but know that they need to go back and protect the Pride Lands. Their decision is sealed when Janja and Jasiri come with word that Zira and her pride are about to attack to the Pride Lands.
  • Call-Back:
  • Everyone Can See It: Ono and Beshte note that Fuli and Azaad are getting really close, like Kion and Rani... and then Beshte calls them "Really good friends!".
  • Falling-in-Love Montage: Between Kion and Rani as they sing "We're Of The Same Pride".
  • Good Feels Good: At the end of the episode, Janja admits that doing good actually feels good.
  • I Choose to Stay: Makini chooses to stay at the Tree of Life since being Queen Rani's royal mjuzi is her role in the Circle of Life.
  • Lyrical Dissonance: Kion's voice noticeably sounds deeper and more adultlike than normal during his love song with Rani. This led to fans assuming a different person sung the song as Kion, despite the fact his normal voice actor is listed as the one who sang the song. It was confirmed that it was Aaron Daniel Jacob who provided Kion's singing voice instead of Max Charles.
  • Moment Killer: After Rani proposes to Kion, albeit indirectly, it looks as though he will say yes, then Bunga wrecks the moment. Rani throws him a Fuli face for ruining the proposal.
  • Mythology Gag: During Kion and Rani's love song, there are several to Can You Feel The Love Tonight.
    • Kion pulls Rani into the water with him, similar to what Simba did to Nala.
    • Both of them begin to voice qualities about the other that they wish they had, where Simba wished he had Nala's responsibility.
    • The deep nuzzle between the two at the end is identical to the similar nuzzle at the end of the song, though there is no lick on the cheek this time, likely to keep it kid friendly.
  • Not Quite Flight: Kion uses his roar to generate tornadoes to carry everyone, including himself, across a ravine.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: This episode reveals that Janja is scared of both thunder and lightning.
