Recap / The Lion Guard S 2 E 4 Ono And The Egg

Go To

Summary: Ono begrudgingly becomes the protector of a hamerkop's egg left in his nest and chases off an African harrier hawk who has come to the Pride Lands to hunt for tasty new treats.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Big Eater: Mpishi. She has been described as a "foodie", and it's clear she wants to eat the different sorts of prey in the Pride Lands not to satisfy her hunger but simply for the thrill of eating.
  • Breather Episode: The last to take place before the next where everything goes serious from there.
  • Chekhov's Skill: As mentioned in "Babysitter Bunga", Bunga is crucial to the Guard as he's the only one who can climb well. Here, he uses his climbing skills to ambush and take out Mwoga when the rest of the Guard are unable to.
  • Continuity Nod: Bunga volunteers to babysit the hamerkop egg, citing his experience from "Babysitter Bunga" as the reason why he's qualified.
  • Dance Line: During Mpishi's part of the Villain Song, small animals are seen doing a conga line into the harrier-hawk's mouth. Happens again during Mwoga's part, only with animal skeletons (representing carrion).
  • A Day in the Limelight: Mwoga plays a major villainous part in the episode, without Mzingo or any of his fellow committee members accompanying him.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Mpishi does not like carrion. By contrast, Mwoga seems to have a distaste for fresh food.
  • Egg MacGuffin: Kulinda leaves her egg in Ono's nest until she finishes making her nest a safer place, forcing Ono to look after her egg.
  • Fartillery: Bunga lets loose a massive fart to convince the rock hares to leave their den before a mudslide traps them.
  • Imprinting: Kulinda's daughter mistakes Ono for a member of her family upon hatching, despite Ono trying to convince her otherwise. Although she immediately recognizes Kulinda as her mother upon hearing her call.
  • Kidnapping Bird of Prey: Mpishi. She, along with Mwoga, does a literal kidnapping when she captures Kulinda's daughter.
  • Mama Bear: Kulinda.
  • Meaningful Name:
  • Never Trust a Trailer: The official synopsis says the egg Ono looks after belongs to a cuckoo bird, when in actuality it belongs to a hamerkop.
  • Papa Wolf: Ono fights off Mpishi and Mwoga when they attempt to eat Kulinda's daughter.
  • Parents for a Day: Ono becomes the foster father for a newly hatched hamerkop.
  • Unexplained Accent: One of the red rock hares speaks with a German accent.
  • Villain Song: "A Real Meal", sung by Mpishi and Mwoga.
  • Villain Team-Up: Mpishi and Mwoga decide to team up in getting the hamerkop. The arrangement is that Mpishi will hunt the baby, while Mwoga can take what's left of her meal.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Mpishi attempts to eat a hatchling hamerkop, with Mwoga helping her.
