Recap / The Lion Guard S 2 E 16 Divide And Conquer

Go To

Summary: The Guard faces two attacks, so Kion enlists the help from Tamaa the drongo to help them be in two places at once.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Back in the Saddle: Rafiki hasn't fought since the first film, and it wasn't until this ordeal that brought out his badass side.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: Reirei completely has Tamaa at her mercy when she finds him out. But when Tamaa tells them about how the entire Lion Guard is helping Rafiki, she quickly forgets him and takes her whole pack with her all the while passing up an easy chance to finish him off. And it comes back to haunt them later when Tamaa warns Kion of the approaching jackals and distracts Janja which allows Kion to take him down at the climax.
  • The Bus Came Back: Tamaa makes an appearance for the first time since "Call of the Drongo" in Season 1.
  • Convection, Schmonvection: Goigoi absentmindedly walks straight into a river of lava, yet the worst that happens to him are singed paws. Cheezi's tail also comes in contact with the magma, again with only a slight burn.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Scar has not lost his snarky side even as a ghost, as shown when he tells Chungu he is correct when Rafiki could sense his presence.
  • Dirty Coward: Scar calls Janja this when he appears to berate the hyena in person.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Though he was just stating the obvious, Chungu makes the connection that Rafiki, who can communicate with the Kings of the Past, could also sense Scar's return.
  • Enemy Mine: The jackals are now fully on Scar's side, working alongside the hyenas, and jackals aren't known to get along with hyenas.
  • Idiot Ball: Kion made it a point that Tamaa should keep low and not do anything that could blow his cover while distracting the jackals so that he doesn't get in a sticky situation like last time. Tamaa himself was even concerned about getting caught without the Guard around. And yet, when he has jackals whimpering in fear, he decides to impersonate Kion doing the Roar, even though he can't actually do it. And once no roar happens, Reirei instantly finds him out.
  • Mythology Gag: Rafiki gets to show off his kung fu skills again, utilizing the exact same moves from the original movie—the only difference being the backhand is replaced with grabbing Janja's nose.
  • Out-of-Character Alert:
    • The Guard realizes something's up when they see that the hyenas and jackals, normally enemies with each other, are working together.
    • Tamaa's decision to try to impersonate Kion's Roar fails badly and alerts the jackals they have been tricked.
  • The Reveal: It turns out Scar is not confined to his volcano; he can appear in fire anywhere.
  • Tempting Fate: Scar targets Rafiki since he could sense his return, as he doesn’t want anyone to know he’s back yet. Scar then appears to Janja in flames outside of his volcano, leaving behind a symbol that Rafiki recognizes and decides to investigate.
  • Title Drop: Scar says the episode’s word-by-word when he sends the hyenas and jackals on a mission
  • Villain Ball: Given how good Scar has managed to be in being competent, his decision to berate Janja in person outside his volcano is a massive error on his part. Someone could have seen him, and while Kion did not get a good look, Scar was smart enough to know that a symbol would have been left behind.
  • Villain Song: 'We're the Smartest', sung by Janja and Reirei in which they argue over which species is the smartest.
  • Wham Episode: Not only are the hyenas and jackals working together now, but this is the first episode where the Guard (or at least Kion) is made aware of Scar's return (albeit, not getting a good enough look to realize who it was and is therefore unaware of what this really means), and a strangely designed symbol was left behind.
