Recap / The Lion Guard S 2 E 10 The Ukumbusho Tradition

Go To

Summary: Makini and the Guard are excited to attend their first Ukumbusho, but bees threaten to ruin the important celebration!

This episode contains examples of:

  • Animal Stampede: The elephants stampede after the bees arrive.
  • Ass in a Lion Skin: Due to the previous Lion Guard consisting entirely of lions, the non-lion members of the guard are painted yellow to look like lions, complete with red leaves tied around their heads to resemble manes.
  • Breather Episode: This episode shows the Guard and Pridelanders relaxing after the previous, and has no relation to Scar and his Legion of Doom.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Ma Tembo and her herd play a major role in this episode.
  • Death Glare: Played for Laughs. While practicing for the tradition, Kion throws a glare at Fuli for failing to say a line, and then for saying not only fast, but also for not even remotely trying to get the good feeling out of it.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Makini uses up too much paint getting the Guard ready. So she uses pollen from flowers to paint the elephants, and when the bees show up, the whole show goes sideways.
  • I've Never Seen Anything Like This Before: This is Kion's reaction upon seeing his friends painted to look like lions.
Makini: So, Kion? Do they look like lions to you?
    Kion: Uhh...
Bunga: Yeah, come on, Kion! Do we look great, or really great?
Kion: I've definitely never seen anything like it.
  • Interspecies Friendship: Ukumbusho celebrates the friendship between the lions and the elephants.
  • Meaningful Name: Ukumbusho is Swahili for "memorial" or remembrance; in this case, it is a celebration of peace between the first Lion Guard and the elephants.
  • Obsessively Organized: Ma Tembo insists everything should be perfect for Ukumbusho, as the elephants consider the celebration crucial as it is part of their tradition.
  • Oh, Crap!: Ma Tembo screams in horror when she sees the large amount of bees coming towards them.
  • Prima Donna Director: Timon, who tries to make the Guard perform Ukumbusho to how he envisions it. This is probably why Ma Tembo refused his help earlier.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Makini attracts the bees by making the paint out of flowers the bees like. She accepts responsibility, but no one calls her out for it.
  • Scary Stinging Swarm: A swarm of bees are attracted to the elephants after Makini uses flower pollen for their face paint.
  • Vocal Dissonance: This is the first real episode where fans noticed that Kion's voice was considerably deeper than it was before, primarily due to the fact that his actor is becoming older now. Earlier, he intentionally pitches his voice higher while practicing for the celebration.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: All of the elephants are afraid of bees, just like in real life.
