Recap / The Librarians S3 E02 "and the Fangs of Death"

Go To

After a dream involving a spectral Charlene and a burning city, Flynn and Eve need to track the old Guardian down. Though Charlene is fine at first, having enchanted a group of cultists to see her as a deity, Apep quickly finds her. The Librarians attempt to give chase by making their door track people instead of artifacts, but end up separated from Eve and Jenkins, and in a locked-down Canadian laboratory where all but a small group have been turned into beasts. Is Apep behind this disaster? Can it be reversed? And will the Librarians be able to get out alive, let alone find Charlene?

Tropes:

  • Black Dude Dies First: Tom, the uninfected with the darkest skin, gets tackled off of a catwalk. The other notable minority, an Indian lieutenant, doesn't last much longer. The other survivors, with lighter skin tones, end up fine.
  • Chekhov's Gag: Eve's first attempt to bring Charlene back to the library is saying that Cassandra's been doing the accounting. Later, when Charlene goes missing and they need to find her using something she values dearly, the Librarians use her old accounting ledgers.
  • Double-Meaning Title: The titular "Fangs of Death" could refer to the violent infected people, but also hints at the involvement of Anubis, the Jackal-headed Egyptian god of the afterlife.
  • Everybody Hates Hades: Anubis in Egyptian mythology is a neutral deity who is primarily concerned with proper administration of the deceased and acts as a Psychopomp who guides the newly dead. If anything, given his animosity with Set, the Egyptian god of chaos, he would probably be against Apep. Here Jacob describes him as the "Egyptian lord of the underworld" and "the original werewolf," and he's a malevolent figure working for Apep to trap and kill the Librarians by turning the staff of the supercollider lab into werewolves.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: The aforementioned Tom and Lt. Becker; their deaths aren't shown directly, but their heat signatures fade from the tracking computer.
  • Hell Hound: The episode's main threat turns out to be Anubis.
  • Heroic BSoD: Flynn shuts down for a little while after he believes that Charlene was killed in order to draw him into a trap. Until Stone snaps him out of it, he's about to simply let Becker blow up the lab with all of them in it.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Lt. Becker is killed by the infected in order to activate the lab's Supercollider.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Lt. Becker sets the lab's Supercollider to blow, to 'follow protocol' and prevent the infection from spreading out of the building.
  • Liquid Courage: Mentioned when Greg the medic volunteers to work the steam vents when Ezekiel can't; he's asked when he became so brave, and he says that it's what his flask is for.
  • Look Behind You: Flynn pulls this on Jenkins, asking about an invisible cloak.
  • Lured into a Trap: The entire situation was engineered by Apep to kill the Librarians.
  • Noodle Incident: Jenkins mentions that the last time he was in this much pain was when he jumped off the Hindenburg.
  • Not Actually the Ultimate Question: Eve asks Jenkins why he's here, and he starts waxing philosophical. She explains that she actually means why he's right here in the woods with her, rather than back in the Annex as usual.
  • Not Quite Back to Normal: At the end of the episode Jones is mostly cured, but still chases balls when Stone throws them.
  • Our Werewolves Are Different: It's a paranormal disease that, if not in its advanced stages, can be cured with enough wolfsbane. The visible effects include Supernatural Gold Eyes, prominent fangs, animalistic behavior including wolflike howls, and excessive facial hair.
  • Put on a Bus: The end of the episode puts Flynn on a train, looking for Charlene without endangering the others.
  • Reports of My Death Were Greatly Exaggerated: Supposed video evidence that Apep killed Charlene to summon Anubis turns out to have been about a different blonde woman, giving Flynn hope that the Guardian is still alive.
  • Revenge: Apep's plan was to kill Charlene and keep her from revealing the secret to sealing away Pure Evil once it's been released, but when she escaped and he was left with her pendant, he decided to try and take out the Librarians instead.
  • Spanner in the Works: Apep did not plan for Eve to show up and save Flynn at the last second.
  • The Virus: Caused by Anubis, it turns people into his own beastly army.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: The infected are easily corralled with steam, due to the properties of their sickness.
  • Zombie Infectee: Werewolf Infectee in this case — Ezekiel is bitten, but is able to get past the more severely infected because of it, and he survives the episode.
