Recap / The Legend of Vox Machina S02 E10: The Killbox

Go To

The scattered party reassembles for a confrontation with their draconic adversary as Grog faces down his past...

Contains the following tropes:

  • An Arm and a Leg: Grog nearly slices Kevdak's left arm off just above the elbow. Kevdak rips it the rest of the way off and tries to beat Grog to death with it.
  • Autobots, Rock Out!: Much like he did in "Depths of Deceit", Scanlan shreds out to herald Vox Machina's Big Damn Heroes moment.
  • The Cavalry: The other half of Vox Machina shows up just in time to save Grog from a deadly beatdown.
  • Chained to a Bed: Scanlan falls victim to this trick when Kaylie uses Scanlan’s sex addiction to her advantage by pretending to seduce him, only to tie him to the bed while he is in a thong, giving her the opportunity to call him out for his neglect and reveal to him that she is his daughter.
  • Contrived Coincidence: Thanks to the Fey Realm hitting our heroes with Year Inside, Hour Outside, Vex, Vax, Percy and Keyleth ended up gone for three weeks when they'd actually been in there for three days. What this means is that the entire Travel Montage with Grog, Scanlan and Pike also took roughly three weeks, allowing the rest of the party to find them in Westruun just in time. Given their exit was aided by the Archfey Artagan, it's implied this precise manipulation of their exit's timeframe was intentional on his behalf.
  • Discreet Drink Disposal: While Grog and Zanror heartily drink their ale, Percy (who prefers wine) quietly spills his ale out.
  • Easily Forgiven: After the Herd's Heel–Face Turn, both they and Vox Machina hold no grudges for almost trying to murder each other. Especially since Vox Machina managed to mow down several marauders before the truce. The two groups even joke about it over drinks.
  • Fair-Play Villain: Played With. When Kevdak accepts Grog's Duel to the Death challenge, he initially picks a long-handled axe similar to Grog's original one to fight him with, but discards it to fight him in hand-to-hand when Grog sheepishly admits he's 'between weapons at the moment'. This seems as much to quiet any claims of cowardice on his behalf, given Grog's still extremely weakened by Craven Edge's curse and poses no real threat to him anyway. When he does manage to throw off said curse, regain his muscular physique, and start overwhelming Kevdak in a flurry of Blows, Kevdak has no issue activating the Titanstone Knuckles' power to turn into an even bigger hulking bruiser than he was before, putting the size and power disparity between them back to square one.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: Just mere moments after being in an epic battle with each other that took many lives, Vox Machina and The Herd proceed to celebrate in a tavern to get drunk and be entertained by Scanlan and Kaylie.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Grog vertically bisects Kevdak with an axe strike from above.
  • Luke, You Are My Father: The episode ends with Kaylie revealing herself to be Scanlan's illegitimate daughter.
  • Mythology Gag: Scanlan tells Kaylie a story about a time he turned all of Vox Machina into cows, which happened during the Briarwood arc in the stream but didn't make the transition to the series.
  • Post-Victory Collapse: After he finally kills Kevdak, Grog passes out from his injuries.
  • The Power of Friendship: Grog finally finds the answer to Earthbreaker Groon's question of where his strength comes from: when he sees Pike at Kevdak's mercy, he regains his lost prowess with a triumphant roar of "I WOULD LIKE TO RAGE!!!" and fights back all the more fiercely to protect his adoptive sister.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: Grog does this five times during the fight against Kevdak.
    • Upon seeing Pike in danger at the hands of his uncle, Grog finally realizes where his strength truly comes from, and gets his Heroic Second Wind.
      Grog: I… would like… to… RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE!
    • Immediately after this, Grog rushes at Kevdak, repeatedly punching him in the face.
      Grog: NEVER! TOUCH! MY! FRIENDS!
    • After Kevdak gets the upper hand once more and the rest of the team assemble on the rooftops above, Grog announces that it's time to go wild.
Grog: Vox Machina... FUCK! SHIT! UUUUUUUP!
    • When Grog manages to get in a devastating blow that leaves it literally hanging from a thread, Kevdak basically goes "Fuck it" and rips off his own arm with barely so much as a flinch, leaving the former stunned.
      Grog: That. Is. Badass.
    • And finally, with an assist from Vex, Grog gets the coup de grace on Kevdak.
      Grog: FOOOOR... STRONGJAAAAAAAW!!!!
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Grog is able to regain his former strength and then some when he realizes the true source of his strength, but even all of that is still not enough to singlehandedly defeat an enlarged goliath wielding legendary weapons. Fortunately, Grog doesn't HAVE to fight him alone.
  • Trailers Always Spoil: A teaser of the upcoming episodes shows Grog with both his muscular physique restored as well as wearing the Titanstone gauntlets, showing his confrontation with Kevdak ultimately worked out for him despite the poor odds.
  • Wham Line: At the end of the episode, Kaylie leads Scanlan to her room with the promise of BDSM. After she has him all bound up, she tells him a bit about how her mother had not only used all of her life savings to pay for her education, but had told her many a tale about him. Scanlan muses on how her mother must be quite proud of her, only for Kaylie to give a bitter laugh.
Kaylie: Aye… she would be proud. (suddenly points her sword at him) Proud I'm finally meeting the silver-tongued devil who whispered empty promises in her ear, then disappeared. Leaving her with nothing but a song… and me.
    Scanlan: Wait… I'm DADDY?!
  • Year Outside, Hour Inside: When Percy, Vax, Vex and Keyleth returns from the Fey Wild to Whitestone, they are told they've been gone three weeks, which for them had only been three days.
