Recap / The Interns S 9 E 5

Go To

Gleb forces Semyon to fix his mistake and finally explain to Polina that Gleb does not love her. Unfortunately, Polina overhears the part of their conversation — exactly the wrong part — and now is even more convinced that he does. She doesn't believe Semyon's attempts to explain, either. Meanwhile, Bykov decides to check Polina's skills for real; it would affect whether she would even stay in the hospital any longer. He watches over her working, and makes several recordings, but never explains what exactly they means. Now, Polina worries that she may be kicked out of the hospital. Polina asks Gleb for help with learning what Bykov writes down (so she may at least fix some mistakes), still believing that he loves her and would be glad to help. Gleb suggests a plan: he would distract Bykov, while Polina would steal his notepad — only to backstab her and reveal her intentions to Bykov, who joins forces in order to humiliate Polina. But Bykov intentionally botches Gleb's plan, allowing Polina to go away, stating that he has his own, much better plan. Polina looks the notes — and sees that they only contains insults towards her. Gleb interprets them as "encrypted notes about her failures", and suggests to just quit by herself. Only then Bykov reveals the truth — and Gleb's true intentions. Now Polina knows that Gleb indeed hates her — and has a reason to hate him in turn.

Phil feels irritated from constant dripping from a broken water a tap in on-call room. When he complains to other interns, Gleb suggests to just fix it himself. When Phil insists that this is not "his work", and suggests to call a plumber, Gleb again points out that he can do it by himself. Phil refuses and goes to Rita instead. However, he achieves nothing even when he tries to call from her office. When Phil ignores her also suggesting to just fix the water tap by himself, Rita sends him to the plumber's "office", where he wastes an hour waiting for the plumber who "went out for fifteen minutes" — and Rita then points that the note was put there fifteen days ago. But Phil refuses to give up, and goes to Kisegach. Kisegach states that she can't simply fire their plumber and hire a new one, and suggests the same thing as everyone before her: jut fix the damn thing by himself. Unfortunately, Phil interprets her words as a signal to cause some sabotage himself, so plumber would be forced to finally go and fix things. This indeed summons a plumber, who fixes broken toilet and promises to deal with Phil's problem, too... which he never actually does. Phil gives up, and finally tries to fix the broken water tap by himself — only to utterly botch the job. Kisegach busts him during this, and says that if he's that incompetent, then he indeed better wait for the plumber.

Kupitman has a new rival — a new elite private clinic literally across the road. But he already has a plan how to deal with it; and Semyon would play a crucial part in it: he would pretend to be their client, then steal their list of clients, and publish it online, which would ruin the clinic's reputation beyond repair. But during infiltration attempt, Lobanov gets busted by one of Olga's friends, who then brings Olga herself (who's here for pregnancy-related reasons). In attempt to explain that he's not cheating on her, he accidentally spills Kupitman's plan to the clinic's owner, who's standing right behind him. All three confronts Kupitman. Kupitman tries to backstab Semyon — and nearly succeeds at dumping the guilt on him — but Lobanov presses him into admitting the truth by threatening to kill him if his lies would cause Olga to dump him. He reluctantly agrees... and now his rival has a recording of this conversation, meaning that if Kupitman ever attempts something like this again, she would ruin his career.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Exact Eavesdropping: Polina overhears Gelb's conversation with Semyon about her and Gleb's names, but interprets that part she heard as him still being in love with her. Which is exactly opposite of what Gleb and Semyon plans to achieve. At least, she decides to avoid Gleb in order to not cause him more pain (since she feels nothing to him).
  • Dirty Coward: When confronted by Lobanov, Olga and the rival clinic's owner, Kupitman tries to pretend that nothing happened and Lobanov just lied. This almost leads to Olga dumping Semyon here and now, but Lobanov shouts on Kupitman and threatens him that if he would not confirm his role in this mess, and Olga leaves, he would not hesitate to kill him. Kupitman, probably realising that this is not an empty treat, reluctantly agrees. The rival, just in case, records the whole conversation, so if he ever tries anything like this again, he would lose any chance to find a job as a venereologist ever again.
  • D.I.Y. Disaster: When the plumber finally arrives and promises to fix the broken water tap "within half an hour", only to never appear, even by late night (and never answers to phone call, either), Phil gives up on his "but I'm not plumber" principle and does try to fix it by himself. He completely botches it, and gets called out by Kisegach (who busts him during it), who states that when they suggested him to fix it himself, they expected that he has at least some basic understanding of what to do (even she knows better than him). If he's that terrible, then yes, better wait for a real plumber.
  • Dripping Disturbance: Phil is irritated by constant dripping from a broken water tap. Everyone else can at least tolerate it, but it quickly drives Phil nuts, kickstarting his plot.
  • The Ghost: Hospital has a plumber amongst the stuff, who's still registered and receives his salary, but never appears in person. Yet somehow when something goes really wrong, he always manages to fix it — and disappears again. Phil thinks that it's better to just fire him and hire a "normal" one, to which Kisegach replies with stating that at least he can do his job and is not an alcoholic; they don't know what to expect from a new one. Unfortunately, Phil interprets it as an excuse to cause something "going really wrong" himself, and sabotages one of the toilets. Plumber does appear after that, however, and gets very irritated, because he notices a broken toilet exactly when he wanted to use it himself, and is now forced to fix it first.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Kupitman's plan — to force Lobanov to infiltrate a rival clinic and steal their list of clients — goes wrong immediately, because Lobanov gets busted in the clinic by one of Olga's friends who then brings Olga herself (who visited it for pregnancy-related reasons). In attempts to explain that he's here not because he cheated on Olga (and was infected in the process), Semyon reveals Kupitman's plan — with the clinic's owner standing right behind him. It goes even worse from here.
  • Hidden Purpose Test: Bykov keeps checking Polina during work (and outside of it) and writing something into his notepad, but never answers exactly what he writes down, though it's pretty obvious that it couldn't be a good thing. Then it turns out that there's no test at all, and he simply trolled her. Then it turns out that the real purpose of this test was to test her ability to deal with stress, which she failed (though Bykov would let her stay anyway).
  • I'm a Doctor, Not a Placeholder: Everyone answers to Phil's complaints about a dripping water tap with "fix it yourself!", but Phil insists that he's a doctor, not a plumber. He has no luck with calling a plumber, and eventually proceeds to do as everyone suggested — only to utterly fail, proving his original statement right.
  • Just Eat Gilligan: Everyone suggests to Phil to just try and fix the broken water tap by himself (it's not even that hard), but he insists on searching for a "real" plumber and wastes a whole day without achieving anything. When he actually does try, it ends up disastrously, proving that waiting for plumber was a better option.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Not only Kupitman's dirty plan how to destroy a rival clinic fails (with said rival now having something blackmail-worthy on him), he gets busted by one of the former patients here when Kupitman tries to come and apologise (likely with ulterior motifs), who interprets it as Kupitman admitting this clinic to be a better place, and calls his friends to tell them.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Lobanov refuses to sleep with Olga. Later, when she busts him in a venereological clinic, she interprets it as him cheating on her and now being infected with STD. Even when she learns the truth, she insists on Semyon checking for real, not with Kupitman, just to be sure.
  • No Pregger Sex: Semyon refuses to sleep with Olga, despite her insisting that nothing bad would happen, out of fear to harm their future baby; he refuses her like this for quite long time already. Unfortunately, later events of the episode leads to Olga interpreting his refusal in much darker light.
  • No Time to Explain: When Gleb explains to Bykov his plan (backstabbing Polina so she would not think that Gleb loves her), Gleb tells completely clueless about what he just heard Bykov that this is a "long story".
  • Pet the Dog: Bykov is fine with trolling Polina, but when Gleb tries to make her quit for real, Bykov stops playing along and reveals the truth.
  • Removing the Rival: Kupitman has a new rival — an elite private clinic literally across the road. But he already has a plan how to deal with it; Semyon would infiltrate it, guised as their client, steal the list of clients and publish it online, which would ruin their reputation beyond repair.
  • Troll: Bykov's notes actually contains insults towards Polina with no hidden purpose whatsoever. When he allows Polina to steal them, he orders Gleb (who cooperated with him) to lie to Polina that they are actually encrypted notes about her real screwups. When Gleb also suggest her to just quit herself before Bykov would humiliate her and then kick out anyway, Bykov finally reveals the truth to her.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: In the end, Polina (when she learns the truth from Bykov) calls Gleb out on wanting her being fired simply because he dislikes her, considering this to be incredibly petty and selfish. Gleb doesn't get it.
  • Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: Gleb treats the name "Polina" as something stupid, and mocks it. Semyon doesn't share his opinion, and when Gleb continues, starts mocking his name. Polina mistakes them repeating names "Gleb" and "Polina" as Gleb still being in love with her.
