Recap / The Interns S 9 E 18

Go To

Semyon nearly forcibly puts Olga into the hospital for the last two weeks of her pregnancy, just in case, despite her insistence that everything would be fine. In the hospital, Olga suddenly panics, fearing that something may go bad with her pregnancy. Kisegach, after failing to convince her, just escorts her to their obstetrician. He calms Olga down, stating that due to her being young and healthy, everything would be fine... and then scares Kisegach, stating that the same can't be said about her. But he assures them both that under his watch, everything would go fine: he has twenty years of experience, after all. Kisegach ultimately calms down, knowing that Bykov would be present when the time comes... but Olga starts feeling that it's her who needs Bykov being present, cause she can't trust Semyon (due to him being too nervous). But Lobanov, when told, insists that he must be near Olga himself. Bykov, who was ready to call Semyon out on being a coward, asks him whether he's indeed ready. Lobanov insists that he is, and, to prove it, goes to watch the other woman giving birth... only for Bykov to soon receive a call: Semyon had fainted right in the ward.

Gleb's patient's friends wants to organise a bachelor party for him, for which they need to smuggle in a stripper (she would be disguised for a nurse). Gleb agrees to help them on condition that they would invite him, too. Gleb actually tries to smuggle a stripper (a girl called Oksana), but immediately gets busted by Bykov. Bykov falls for his lies that it's a nurse, but separates them, directing Oksana to Rita, and Gleb to the patients. Gleb makes another attempt afterwards, but fails for the same reason. Realising that the third attempt would be too risky, Gleb asks Rita to cover for him, so he may organise everything right here, to which she reluctantly agrees, on condition that he would "dance" for her later. But by mistake, Oksana goes to the wrong patient, and refuses to stay for any longer. Gleb is forced to reveal the truth to his patient, who's not impressed with the whole plan, since he believes that just spending some time together would be much better than some random stripper. Gleb comes up with an idea how they can throw a party right in the hospital: he just tells Bykov about the whole plan with stripper, gets a night shift and organises everything.

Bykov presses Phil to give him money, stating that he just paid "on Phil's regard" to organise a collective gift for one of the doctors. Phil refuses, stating that he doesn't know this doctor, and this is not the first and not even the second time Bykov does this; Phil refuses to pay for the birthday party for someone he doesn't know or care about. When Bykov tries to point out that they previously paid in the same manner for his birthday, Phil counters this by pointing out that firstly, he didn't ask for this, and secondly, they gifted him ten litres of whisky... which Bykov then drank by himself anyway. Bykov then insists that this is an old Russian "tradition", to collect money for birthday presents ("pay for your friends, and expect that they would pay for you"), and suggests a way to prove it: they would create a fake person (surgeon Pichugin), and Phil would see how everyone would happily give money for his birthday, despite not even knowing him. Phil would collect the money. In the case Bykov turns out to be wrong, Phil may keep his money; Phil agrees. Phil successfully collects money from everyone, even Kupitman (who actually pays twice the required amount, likely to promote himself), and it seems that Bykov may actually win. As a last ditch attempt, Phil starts questioning people how "Pichugin" even looks like; despite not being able to provide an adequate answer, everyone assures him that they "certainly" know him. However, after visiting the Surgery, Rita learns that "Pichugin" doesn't exist, and goes to confront Phil alongside everyone else whom he fooled. Now, it's up to him to explain about the bet...

This episode provides examples of:

  • The Bet: Phil's plot involves his bet with Bykov; Bykov wants to prove that when somebody has a birthday, everyone would give some money to pay for the collective gift, while Phil thinks that people only cares about their close friends, and wouldn't pay for some random people they never even met before. Bykov turns out to be right... and this "bet" turns out to be yet another of his pranks on Phil.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Oksana's "nurse outfit" makes it painfully obvious that she's actually a stripper (no sane person would dress in such revealing and impractical outfit for work). Bykov somehow still manages to mistake her for actual nurse, and directs her to Rita, twice. He only learns about her real "profession" when Gleb tells him himself.
  • Faint in Shock: To prove that he can stay near Olga, Semyon witnesses another woman giving birth. Then Bykov receives a call: Lobanov fainted out right in the ward, and he now must take him away.
  • Gilligan Cut: Semyon tells Bykov that he goes to the nursery to watch other women giving birth, so he would be ready for his wife's delivery. When asked whether he's sure this is a good idea, he states that he has iron will. Cut to a nurse calling Bykov and saying that Semyon just fainted; Semyon can be seen on background, motionlessly lying on a gurney, only to drop from it when Bykov finishes talking.
  • Invented Individual: Bykov creates the "surgeon Pichugin" for his bet with Phil (to test whether people would pay for a collective present for some strangers). When Phil realises that Bykov is actually close to winning, he starts questioning people how that "Pichugin" even looks like; with varying degree of success, everyone states an excuse why they can't remember, but everyone insists that they do know him.
  • No Ending: Phil's plot ends with everyone finally arriving at the "birthday party" for Pichugin, only to find that he doesn't exist, and run into embarrassed Phil. Scene cuts off before we learn how Phil would deal with the situation.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: When Gleb reveals to him that he tried to smuggle a stripper into the hospital, Bykov punishes him... and Rita, who previously tried to cover for him (as that stripper was a "gift" for one patient's bachelor party).
  • Panicky Expectant Father: While Olga is relatively calm, Semyon is extremely nervous, trying to make sure that nothing would go wrong.
    • Despite them having two weeks until it's time to give birth, Semyon already started worrying and nearly forcibly put Olga at the hospital, completely ignoring all her arguments that everything would be okay. On any Olga's idea, he provides an counterargument. Using ambulance, like other people? Semyon worked with them, they're unreliable! Taxi? Olga would forget their numbers when pain would become too severe, and in the worst case scenario, taxi driver can't provide an adequate help.
    • This is actually why Olga wants Bykov presented near her during delivery instead of Semyon, expecting him to panic and as result make her more nervous. However, when she tells about this idea to Semyon, he, clearly being offended by her mistrust, insists on being presented anyway.
  • Perpetual Poverty: Semyon only manages to find 400 roubles (out of required 500) for Pichugin's birthday party, and states that he's tired of non-ending birthdays. This may be yet another reason why he's always low on money.
  • Pet the Dog: Gleb's patient's friends planned a surprise for him (a stripper in nurse disguise), but it was ruined. Gleb promises them to throw a bachelor party right here, in the hospital, which would require him to stay on a night shift. To do so, he just tells Bykov about the whole plan, which, given that Bykov previously mistook said stripper for the actual nurse twice, unsurprisingly leads to him being punished.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Gleb manages to convince Rita to not reveal his plan (smuggle a stripper for his patient) to Bykov, and to bring said stripper herself, since he's now on another task, but forgets to explain where to send her. As result, Oksana visits the wrong patient and leaves, ruining the whole plan.
