Recap / The Interns S 8 E 7

Go To

Bykov and Lobanov are unsure what to do now, when their women are pregnant. To discuss this... situation, Semyon invited Bykov into bar. Lobanov thinks that he may start with (re)marrying Olga... to which Bykov reacts negatively. Why? Because Anastasia would try to force him into marriage, and in attempt to not look worse than Semyon, Bykov would try to impress her with better and more expensive wedding ring, which in turn would force Semyon to retaliate in kind, and so on, and so on. When Semyon suggests to just do two identical weddings, Bykov tells him that this would fail because Olga would refuse him due to sheer suddenness, while Anastasia would not.

Suddenly, the stream of beer pours on Bykov's head — Gleb ovheard everything, and reacted very badly to him attempting to run away after impregnating his mother. Gleb insists that Bykov must marry Kisegach, otherwise he would become just some "random dude" in his child' history, nobody and nothing but a black spot in his or her history (to which Semyon agrees). Bykov then reminds him that while now he has a loving mother and a best friend who always sticks with him, once both Kisegach and Lobanov would marry, they would have little time for him — very little.

Their discussion gets interrupted by Kupitman, who suddenly arrives and gets surprised to find them here. He is not related to this story in any way besides simply knowing about it, but considers that he must be involved anyway, since as long as it's related to women, he is in. Kupitman quickly gets wasted, but remains sane enough to tell them his own story with his old, old ex-girlfriend who got pregnant... but, as it turns out, not from him. What this story is supposed to point out is that there's a chance that Olga is pregnant from Phil. Semyon nearly rushes to Olga right now, only stopped by Bykov, who points out that awakening Olga for some bullshit in 4 a.m. is not the smartest of his ideas.

Discussion again gets interrupted, this time by Kisegach... who immediately after arriving pours Bykov with another cup of beer — due to him promising to "just spend one hour with Semyon for a friendly chat", only to waste several times more than that, in a company of other drunkards. Gleb then reminds Bykov that he promised to propose to Kisegach, which he (very awkwardly and unromantically) does right here — only for her to refuse, saying that she does not consider him to be a good husband anyway (especially since he did it not sincerely, but due to Gleb's pressure), and is okay with the situation remaining as is; while Semyon, unlike her, actually needs to marry Olga... speaking about Semyon, where is he? Everyone rushes to Olga in attempt to catch Semyon before something bad happens... and then it turns out that Semyon hid in the restroom to provoke them into running away, so they would leave him alone.

This episode provides examples of:

  • The Alcoholic: Kupitman is the only character who arrived in the bar just to drink; all the others are here due to the situation with Olga's and Kisegach's pregnancies. When he actually joins the discussion, he wastes half an hour, drinks four cups of beer and becomes wasted to the point where he becomes incapable of suggesting anything comprehensible.
  • Ask a Stupid Question...: When asked "what the hell are you doing here?" after him suddenly appearing in the bar, Kupitman replies with "if you would arrive to your home, and somebody would ask you 'what the hell are you doing here?' — would you answer? So, what the hell are you doing here?"
  • Bait-and-Switch:
  • Batman Gambit: Lobanov hid in the restroom, expecting that everyone would assume that he rushed to Olga, and would run to her, thus leaving him alone. He succeeds, albeit it backfires on him.
  • Bottle Episode: Sans for Imagine Spots and brief visits to Olga, entirety of this episode occurs in one small bar.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Kisegach's Imagine Spot consists of her giving a long, sarcasm-filled speech about how "awesome" it's to become pregnant in her age. It makes sense, given that it's aimed at Bykov.
Kisegach: My God, how great it is to become pregnant in forty two years! You wouldn't believe me: I feel better than in twenty! So much lightness, so much energy! Maybe, I should had waited till fifty? Because pregnancy in fifty is everything what woman can dream of! Maybe, I should now become pregnant every year? Though it would be unfair to Andrey: unlike him, we, women, have no troubles with it: we need simply to bear, to birth and to raise a child; while men have all the troubles! He's getting tired on his work as is, without pregnancy to save him! How great it is that they decided to go into a dirty pub and get totally wasted! Well done!
  • Disappeared Dad: Gleb points to Bykov that if he leaves Kisegach, instead of a normal father, he would become some "random dude" for his child — nothing but a black spot in his or her history. Semyon agrees to him and tells that this is one of the reasons why he would not leave Olga.
  • Escalating War: How Bykov sees consequences of Semyon (re)marrying Olga, which would eventually destroy their lives. In his Imagine Spot, in order to not look worse than Lobanov, Bykov would try to impress Anastasia with expensive wedding ring; in retaliation to this, Semyon would offer Olga a honeymoon trip, which Bykov would counter with expensive renovation in their (new) apartment and new car on which Bykov would ride with Anastasia to prestigious resort, and she would quit her job because Bykov would provide them with everything all by himself. Imagine Spot cuts before Semyon manages to counter this.
  • Extremely Protective Child: If there's one human whom Gleb would protect so much, it's his mother Anastasia; when he hears that Bykov considers to run from her, now when she's pregnant from him, he reacts by pouring Bykov's head with beer. After Bykov clears himself out, Gleb tells him, in no uncertain terms, to rush to Kisegach and propose to her, now. He even has a ring prepared (it belongs to his grandmother and was supposed to be for Gleb's wedding, but now would serve Bykov).
  • Glorified Sperm Donor: Discussed; Bykov gets told by Gleb that if he just runs from Anastasia like a coward, he would be nobody in his son's life, just some "random dude" (cue the appropriate sketch a sketch). Lobanov then comments that he doesn't want such fate for himself, so he wouldn't abandon Olga.
Kisegach [feeding her son]: One spoon for mommy; one spoon for daddy... one spoon for random dude...
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Lobanov hides in the restroom to trick the others into running away, thinking that he's at Olga's, so he wouldn't be forced to continue this awkward conversation. This results in him being forced to pay for all four, and then asking Olga for money, as he's obviously low on them.
  • Honorable Marriage Proposal:
    • Lobanov's first (and currently only) idea what to do now, when Olga is pregnant, is to (re)marry her. Bykov (at first) tries to talk him out of this, because he fears that this would lead to Escalating War between their families.
    • Gleb tries to force Bykov into marrying Anastasia, and he actually proposes to her once she arrives (to investigate why Bykov wasted so much time when he was supposed to just have short talk with Semyon), but she refuses him, stating that she's okay with the situation as is, without some forced marriage which would change nothing.
  • Imagine Spot: Several ones used throughout the episode to illustrate various points.
    • All scenes used to illustrate the possible consequences of Olga an Anastasia's pregnancies are styled as some sort of comedic play (complete with two stages, representing their houses, cheesy dialogues and old-fashioned clothes), to show how absurd the situation is. The first one tells about possible Escalating War if Semyon tries to marry Olga, another shows Bykov why him not marrying Kisegach would make him just "some random dude" in his child's life, and the third one shows that if Bykov and Lobanov do marry their women, Gleb would likely remain alone, as neither his friend nor his mother would have time for him.
    • When Kupitman arrives and tries to tell the story about one women who got pregnant from him, his story is stylised after old monochrome silent movies. In it, his old Love Interest was accidentally impregnated... as it turns out, not by him, and she dumped him for the real father of her child. The end. What Kupitman intended to point out with this is that there's no guarantee that Olga is pregnant from Semyon: after all, she recently had sex with Phil, too.
    • When Kisegach arrives, her view on the situation with late pregnancy is demonstrated by a scene resembling some sort of commercial, where she gives sarcasm-filled speech about how "awesome" late pregnancy is.
  • It's All About Me: Bykov doesn't plan to marry Anastasia, and tries to talk Semyon out of marrying Olga to not look as bad in comparison. He only proposes to her when told that the child wouldn't go nowhere, and if he wouldn't do what's right, he would be merely some "random dude" (the idea he dislikes); it gets rejected as insincere.
  • Large Ham: Actors in "comedic play" used throughout the episode's several Imagine Spots to illustrate Bykov's point talks very cheesy. Given that it's Bykov' who sets them up, it makes sense.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: Near beginning of the episode, Gleb pours Bykov's head with beer (due to him considering to leave Gleb's mother after impregnating her). Later, when Kisegach arrives and does exactly the same due to him wasting time in some bar in the middle of the night without warning her, Bykov asks Gleb whether he has any more relatives in Moscow — it seems that doing something like this is their family trait.
  • Mama's Baby, Papa's Maybe: Kupitman points that Olga had sex with not only Semyon, but also with Phil, and they can't be sure it's Semyon's child, no matter what they think and what Olga says.
  • Oh, Crap!: When Kisegach mentions Semyon (who, as she thinks, must propose to Olga, for their own good), Gleb notices that Semyon is gone for some time already (likely disappeared during Kisegach's Imagine Spot), and realises that he must have rushed to Olga, despite Bykov telling him not to do so (she would not be happy to see drunk Semyon in the middle of the night).
  • Out of Focus: Neither Varya nor Phil appears in this episode.
