Recap / The Interns S 8 E 10

Go To

Bykov must find someone to replace Lyuba until he returns from her vacation. He firstly tries to appoint Valya (one of Lyuba's subordinates), but quickly gets bored by her lack of aggressiveness (he misses constant verbal duels with Lyuba). Then Kisegach offers him the list of other possible candidates... all of whom gets rejected after interviewing them. Bykov has only one option left: his ex-girlfriend, Rita. Their relationship is long gone, but they parted on good terms; Bykov wasn't planning to suggest her, but they run out of other options, and she's fitting candidate. Kisegach reluctantly agrees.

Phil realises that the other people considers him to be boring, meticulous and always complaining about everything. When other interns agrees with this statement, he asks Kupitman, who agrees too... and suggests some ways to become more tolerable for his patients: he dumps them with medical terms, while a good doctor must be somewhat enigmatic, only providing the patients with as much information as they need. Unfortunately, he interprets it as not providing them with information at all, which only scares them off. Bykov at first reacts very negatively, but once he learns why he even tried this, tells him to be more sceptical about Kupitman's advices in general: him being "enigmatic" can be explained by the combination of alcoholism and weak memory because of which he can't remember neither his patients nor his prescriptions, and tries to hide it this way. He also reminds him that his "meticulousness" is actually a good trait for a doctor... just not very good for a friend.

Gleb finds out that Varya's patient, Katia, is a very attractive woman... who may or may not be a porn star from one of Gleb's favourite "movies". He must know for sure, and the only way to do so is to send Varya to "delicately" interrogate her. Varya learns that she had, in fact, small role... in a juice's advertisement (juice was rather crappy, by the way). Varya planned to call Gleb out on all this, but Semyon (who suffered throughout the whole day due to Gleb's antics) tells her that he has a better plan: they may confirm Gleb's delusion that Katia is indeed a porn star, and let him do the rest, while they can watch and laugh.

This episode provides examples of:

  • All Men Are Perverts:
    • The fifth candidate whom Bykov interviews has very huge breasts. Bykov, despite being in relationship, reacts in very specific way, and instantly agrees... but Kisegach refuses her on the spot, specifically due to this reaction.
    • Gleb's interest to porn kickstarts his and Varya's plot, since he mistakes Varya's patient for one of his favourite porn stars. Varya and Semyon (both of whom suffered due to him in this episode) exploits his mistake to humiliate him, by pretending that he was right about her being a porn star and allowing him and his sleaziness to do the rest.
  • Amicable Exes: Bykov and Rita have long broke up, but remained the good friends. Now, she's the best (and only one left) candidate they have left to replace Lyuba, to which Kisegach reluctantly agrees when she fails to prove that Bykov tries to cheat on her.
  • The Bore: Phil overhears a discussion of his patients about him; they considers him to be deadly boring and meticulous, combined with his habit of complaining about everything (to which the other interns agrees when asked). He then asks Kupitman, who not only agrees with them, but also gives some suggestions how to interact with the patients: do not dump them with medical terms, and be somewhat "enigmatic". This backfires. Fortunately, Bykov later explains to him what he did wrong, and also assures him that his meticulousness is actually a good trait for a doctor... he's just not supposed to show it outside of work.
  • Brawn Hilda: The third candidate whom Bykov tries to interview is a big, muscular and scary woman who may easily pass for a prison warden. Bykov rejects her, stating that here, everyone must fear only him.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Aside from refusing attractive big-breasted woman during interview on the spot once she realises that Bykov feels attraction to her, Kisegach reacts very badly to him even mentioning his ex-girlfriend Rita, despite them not being in relationship (or not even seeing each other) for the seven years — and her being literally the last possible candidate they didn't reject yet. To confirm or disprove Bykov's statement that his relationship with Rita is surely long-gone, she interrogates Kupitman by destroying his cognac, bottle for bottle, until she believes his statement that no, Bykov has no current relationship with Rita.
  • Cute, but Cacophonic: The second candidate whom Bykov tries to interview has very annoying high-pitched voice. Bykov rejects her as soon as he hears her; she doesn't understand why.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Due to Gleb, Semyon was punished by Bykov twice during a single day. Now, with Varya's help (who was in very awkward situation due to him, too), he can retaliate by forcing Gleb into making himself a fool.
  • Good Is Boring: Valya (one of Lyuba's subordinates) is much nicer and gentler than Lyuba. Bykov considers her to be boring because of this (it was much funnier with Lyuba, who had just as sharp tongue as him), and needs somebody else.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Kupitman suggests Phil to not dump medical terms on his patients and provide only as much information as they need, to be somewhat "enigmatic". Phil interprets it as not explaining anything, which scares them into demanding to replace him, due to mistaking his behaviour for him either obscuring something really bad, or simply not knowing what to do (or both). Bykov later tells Phil to be more sceptical about Kupitman's advices in general.
  • Interrogation by Vandalism: Kisegach interrogates Kupitman about Rita by pouring his cognac into a sink, bottle by bottle, until she gets satisfied with his answer.
  • I Resemble That Remark!: During discussion whether Phil qualifies as The Bore or not, Phil quickly irritates Semyon by thinking (aloud) about this and constantly complaining, to the point that Lobanov shouts on him to leave.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Varya's patient is a very attractive blond girl named Katia, to whom Gleb reacts in rather predictable way. Then he watches through a window how she erotically eats banana. As he later tells Semyon that he recognised her as a porn star from one of his favourite "movies"... or, at least, she greatly resembles her, and he needs to find out for sure, because the price of mistake would be too great. When attempt to just search some porn proves to be too ineffective, he asks Varya to "delicately" interrogate her with pretence of anamneses in order to learn more. Turns out that he indeed mistook her for someone else... but Varya, on Semyon's request, doesn't tell him, due to still being angry at him for his previous sleazy behaviour, and lets him make a fool out of himself.
  • Not What It Looks Like: Semyon gets busted by Bykov with a laptop which plays porn. In fact, laptop belongs to Gleb, who tried to find specific porn actress this way, and then rushed from the room too quickly to turn it off, forcing Lobanov to do it instead, and immediately get busted by Bykov.
  • One Dialogue, Two Conversations: Katia talks about her work as an actress... in the juice advertisement. Gleb talks about porn (she looks very similar to one porn actress he vaguely remembers). It only stops when Gleb asks about porn directly when he becomes interested why she talks about it like it's not a big deal.
  • Reverse Psychology: Gleb provokes Semyon into jumping on a table — just in time for Bykov to appear and see this (despite Gleb claiming that Bykov is not here) — by calling Semyon "too fat" to do so.
  • Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: One of the major reasons why Phil's patients considers him being The Bore — he keeps dumping long medical terms on them, while they can't understand anything more specific than "a pill from headache".
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: The first candidate whom Bykov tries to interview is competent — but specific reason for her leaving the previous workplace was her rude boss, who was too informal with his subordinates. Sounds familiar, isn't it? Bykov refuses her on the spot, knowing full well how it would end.
  • Terrible Interviewees Montage: Bykov tries several candidates whom Kisegach had found as potential replacements for Lyuba; none of them fits, forcing him to suggest his ex-girlfriend Rita as the last option they have left.
  • That Came Out Wrong: Phil certainly shouldn't have started talking about the dialogue he overheard with "you wouldn't believe what just happened in the restroom" — especially since Gleb was trying to eat when he did that.
  • Too Much Information:
    • When Gleb starts explaining about his favourite porn star (whom he just found in their hospital), combined with details from specific "movies", Semyon tells him that he sounds rather creepy, and suggests him to watch less porn. Then Gleb tries to find those movies to prove his statement to Semyon, to which he reacts even more negatively.
    • When Phil tries to tell Gleb about the conversation he just overheard... starting with the phrase "you wouldn't believe what just happened in the restroom", Gleb (who's trying to eat) preemptively tells him to stop — he already hurts his appetite.
  • Troll:
    • Gleb provokes Semyon into making himself a fool before Bykov, by using Reverse Psychology to make him jump on a table, while lying that Bykov isn't here (Bykov steps in as soon as Lobanov jumps).
    • Semyon cooperates with Varya to retaliate on Gleb. Gleb just so happened to being interested wether Varya's patient Katia is really his favourite porn star or just looks alike; he sends Varya to find out (it turns out that Gleb indeed mistook her); Varya, following Lobanov's advice, lies to Gleb that this girl is indeed a porn star. Hilarity ensues.
  • What Were You Thinking?: Kupitman calls Bykov out on not thinking before doing when he realises that Bykov just suggested to hire his ex-girlfriend... to his current girlfriend. He has a reason to be mad, because Kisegach started interrogating him to learn whether Bykov restarted relationship with Rita behind her back or recommended her sincerely... by destroying Kupitman's cognac.
