Recap / The Interns S 6 E 2

Go To

Interns, offended by their unfair portrayal in Bykov's story, complains to Kisegach. She promises to them to deal with Bykov. When she tells Bykov to stop mistreating interns, Bykov tells her that, just to prove his point (that they must be mistreated, otherwise they would ruin the whole hospital), he would leave them alone for a day, and they still would create a total mess. But how to do this without it being obvious that he's behind it?

Bykov gets tired of Semyon's and Gleb's ignorance of human anatomy, and forces them to recreate a model of the human skeleton from a pile of plastic bones. Unknowingly to them, Bykov leaved one extra bone, which does not belong anywhere, knowing that they would not guess this by themselves. When they fails to find any use for the extra bone, they asks Phil for help, who, to strike back at them for previously mistreating Varya, lies that it is not just a bone — it's a skeleton's boner; this is not a Homo Sapiens, but rather Homo Habilis, the "skilled human", named that due to said boner. They falls for it, and makes the fools out of themselves when tries to present the model to Kisegach and other doctors, and give them a "lecture".

Lyuba is extremely angry at everyone, including Bykov, for "teaching" her how to do her work, and refuses to do it "right", even when Bykov demands so. Bykov sends Varya with "important mission": she must become Lyuba's boss for a day. Varya tries to force Lyuba to do her work, but she just ignores Varya's orders. Eventually, Lyuba gets tired of Varya's meddling and in no uncertain terms orders her to leave, meaning she just failed.

Phil, at first sight, has nothing to hook him for, but then Bykov finds a patient for him — some drunk hobo without any documents. How Phil would treat him? Not Bykov's problems! But, to Bykov's surprise, Phil not only manages to deal with him, he manages to learn who this guy is, and how he appeared here (which Bykov previously failed to do). Bykov then asks Kupitman for help, and he suggests to try the same method Bykov used to fail Levin on his first day (give him a sex patient, provoke him to "let steam out" and bust mid-action)... only for this plan to fail, too, as Phil has much better self-control than Levin.

In the end, Phil turns out to be the only one who avoided a night shift as punishment. Gleb tries to rat him out, but only makes the problem worse, as it means that they not just failed their task, but plagiarised clearly wrong solution, not realising that it was a prank. As result, Gleb and Semyon receives additional punishment, while Phil gets a day off, for showing that he's the only one with brains.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Kisegach can't help but laugh at Bykov's story, even if she admits that he shouldn't write things like that about his interns.
  • Authority in Name Only: Formally, Varya is Lyuba's boss for a day, but Lyuba ignores all her orders; when Varya irritates her too much, Lyuba, in no uncertain terms, tells her to leave her alone, or else... This leads Varya to tears.
  • Blatant Lies: Phil's "explanation" for the skeleton belonging to a "Homo Habilis" ("skilled man"), that he has a "boner", and that said "boner" is the source of the name, is so blatantly made up, one must be a moron to fall for it... and yet Gleb and Semyon still do, to Bykov's shock.
  • Call-Back: Two different scenes refers to the very first episode:
    • When Bykov fails to deal with Phil by himself by giving him an Impossible Task, he asks Kupitman for help. Kupitman suggests to try the same method Bykov used with Levin back on his first day — to give Phil a sexy patient, and then try to catch him when he tries to relief himself.
    • When every intern (except for Phil, who managed to avoid all his traps) was forced to stand before him and be punished for their screwups, Bykov lampshades that this looks familiar, referring to the scene from the ending of first episode, where Bykov gave each new intern their "marks" for their first task (each intern received an "F" for screwing up), and punished them with a night shift. He even tells Varya that she did not evolve since then even slightly, still remaining a little girl with tendency to cry; she has nothing to say to him.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: When Bykov punishes everyone (except Phil, who managed to avoid all his traps) with a night shift, Gleb attempts to take Phil with him by revealing that it was Phil who told them about the "Homo Habilis". When Bykov learns this, he punishes Gleb and Semyon even further, while Phil gets rewarded with a day off — because it means that Romanenko and Lobanov are even dumber than he thought, falling for such blatant prank.
Bykov: So, this was not even your own idea?! You fell for this primitive prank, by this foreign tourist? Bravo, you managed to degrade.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Interns actually don't consider Bykov's story being funny at all (Bykov portrayed them as being dumber than bricks and then outright killed them off), and complains to Kisegach (they also fears that he may think of something worse if not dealt with).
  • Impossible Task: Bykov deliberately gives his interns the tasks which they would fail, proving his point to Kisegach that they may not function without him being around and shouting at them:
    • Semyon and Gleb must reconstruct a model of human skeleton, as a punishment for their lack of knowledge of human anatomy; unknowingly to them, there's one extra bone which does not belong anywhere. Bykov expected them to fail to understand it, but they fails even worse, due to falling for Phil's prank and making complete fools out of themselves, publicly.
    • Varya must become Lyuba's boss for a day, but Varya completely lacks in strength of will, while Lyuba's so angry today, even Bykov failed to force her to obey. The plan works flawlessly.
    • Attempted, but failed with Phil; Bykov provides him with, supposedly, uncommunicative drunk patient without any documents and even information how he appeared here in the first place, but Phil manages to help him to sober up, learns his name and origin and treats him, forcing Bykov to find alternate way to make him screw up... which also fails.
  • Boob-Based Gag: Bykov decides to use against Phil the same method he used against Levin in his first day: force him to examine a patient with extremely big boobs. With Levin, it resulted in him being busted during his attempt to "let steam out" in the shower. Phil has much better self-control and does not fall for Bykov's provocation when he tries the same joke on him.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The sole reason why Phil plays a prank on Gleb and Semyon is them playing a prank on Varya earlier (whom he had to help); if not for that, he would've helped them sincerely.
  • Overly Long Gag: Gleb and Semyon have no idea how this skeleton's model is supposed to look like and creates some bizarre figures in futile attempts to construct it. For quite some time.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: As vengeance for them previously pranking Varya, Phil plays a prank on Gleb and Semyon, by, rather than reveal that their skeleton model has an excessive bone, make up blatantly false explanation about it being a "boner", due to skeleton belonging to Homo Habilis. They fall for it and makes complete fools out of themselves when tries to present it.
  • The Prankster:
    • Lobanov lied to Varya about subbotnik (essentially, "volunteer" unpaid cleaning work on weekends, an old Soviet, and now Russian, tradition), forcing her to buy and bring to the hospital two pairs of rakes, only to realise that it was a prank. Phil decides to help her.
    • Phil finds an opportunity to strike back at Gleb and Semyon for their previous prank when they ask him about some excess bone in their skeleton model (it was another Bykov's "test"), so he tells them that it was not a bone, but his boner. They fall for it when he says that this is not a skeleton of Homo Sapiens, but rather Homo Habilis, and later proudly presents this skeleton model to Bykov, Kisegach and other doctors, who lets them finish before saying just how utterly idiotic this speech was.
  • Reverse Psychology: Bykov gives Varya an important mission to deal with Lyuba (who, due to her resentment, acts hostile to everyone, including Bykov), but immediately corrects himself, telling Varya that she's too weak to do it and he should probably just give her another task. She tells him that she would not fail him, and runs to Lyuba; now, it's not Bykov giving her impossible task, but her accepting a challenge to "prove him wrong".
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Lobanov correctly guesses that this bone must be the excess one; like when his father-in-law always leaves some excess details after fixing his car, and it still works. Unfortunately, Gleb immediately tells him that his analogy with cars does not work here, and there must be some function for this bone, so they decide to just call Phil, who has a good reason to lie to them.
