Recap / The Interns S 4 E 10

Go To

After their previous awkward "date", Semyon must somehow fix the situation with Varya, by explaining to Gleb that they did not, in fact, had sex... but without telling him that Varya tries to restart their relationship. His only idea is to tell Gleb that Varya is in depression after her patient's death. This quickly escalates out of control when Gleb decides that it was Bykov's fault to give her the patient with no chances of survival in the first place, and that he now continues to mistreat Varya. Gleb confronts Bykov about him acting like utter asshole, and, if not for Lobanov defusing the situation, it would've ended disastrously. Bykov agrees to play along, but Varya gets punished with a night shift at the morgue. Fortunately, she manages to salvage the situation, as she and Gleb now have a good excuse to go on a date; Semyon reluctantly agrees to take Varya's (well-deserved) night shift on himself.

Phil wants to observe Kupitman in action, but Kupitman's patients prefers some privacy. To give Phil the ability to watch and learn, Kupitman decides to use Skype, and pass Phil for his American colleague (the patients would not be as shy if it would be somebody not physically presented here and even living in another country); Kupitman uses this to scam his patients for money, for possibility to ask "best doctor from New York" for help. This works, but now Kupitman must hide Phil from his patients until they leaves, otherwise this would ruin everything. Unfortunately, Phil learns the truth from Lyuba, and decides to warn Kisegach, destroying the whole scheme.

Bykov did not cheat on Kisegach... because he instantly recognised Kupitman's plan and fed him with false information. He tells Anastasia that if she wants to live with him, she could had just told him so, without some overcomplicated schemes... but now he is in a bad mood and would not move with her, even if she ask. Now she must somehow improve his mood. Unknowingly to her, Bykov did, in fact, slept in the other woman's house, but decided to not tell her so.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Didn't Think This Through: Neither Semyon nor Varya thinks about how Gleb would react to their lies before telling him:
    • Lobanov lies about Varya being in depression due to her patient dying — and Gleb rushes to Varya. Lobanov barely manages to warn her at the very last moment.
    • Varya makes up the sob story about Bykov giving her doomed patient. This leads to Gleb confronting Bykov, and Lobanov barely manages to defuse the situation and explain what the hell it just was before anyone gets hurt.
  • Feed the Mole: That story Kupitman told to Kisegach in the previous episode? It was the lie. Bykov instantly recognised his and Kisegach's plan, and fed Kupitman with false information, being perfectly aware that he would tell this to Kisegach as is... but in the end we learn that Bykov did, in fact, sleep in another woman's house that night... and this is the reason why he's so reluctant to agree to live with Anastasia after all.
  • Greedy Jew: While before his corruption was limited to paid private wards, in this episode Kupitman organises an outright scam in attempt to earn more money — by passing Phil for the "best doctor from New York". This scheme gets destroyed when Phil finds out and decides to tell everything to Kisegach.
  • Older Than They Look: When patient starts suspecting that Phil looks too young to be the "best doctor from New York" (he looks twenty five at best), Kupitman lies to him that he's in fact twice that age, and looks so young because of the "good ecology". The patient falls for it.
  • Secret-Keeper:
    • Lobanov still assists Varya in deceiving Gleb. He even makes up some of his own lies to keep the truth from being revealed.
    • Bykov, once explained, agrees to play along with "dead patient" story — and punishes Varya with working in the morgue on a night shift; this ultimately plays into her plan, though, as Gleb mistakes the corpse for Varya's patient, and she uses the opportunity to go on a date with him.
  • Snowball Lie: Varya still refuses to tell Gleb the truth about the previous day's events, which only requires more lies to maintain, and starts involving more people as the story goes on:
    • To distract Gleb from thinking that she and Semyon had sex (which they didn't), Lobanov lies to Gleb that Varya's patient had died and she's in depression — only for Gleb to rush to her, which nearly ruins deception right away (Lobanov manages to warn her at the last moment).
    • When asked for details about her "depression", Varya makes up the sob story about Bykov intentionally giving her hopeless patient, which leads to Gleb confronting Bykov. Lobanov defuses the situation, but still keeps Gleb in the dark, while Varya explains things to Bykov, who agrees to play along for now — and punishes Varya with a night shift in the morgue, where Gleb mistakes a corpse for her "dead patient". Varya tells Bykov that Lobanov "agreed" to take her night shift, so she may go on a date with Gleb; Semyon reluctantly agrees.
  • Wham Episode: Continuing from the previous episode, Bykov confirms that he did, in fact, cheat on Kisegach, which puts their relationship in a serious jeopardy.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: When Gleb hears that Bykov intentionally gave Varya doomed patient, he runs to him and calls him out on being an utter asshole. Unknowingly to him, it was a lie made up by Semyon and Varya.
