Recap / The Interns S 3 E 14

Go To

Lobanov decides to fool Olga into giving him another chance, by pretending to be seriously injured and amnesiac, so she would pity him. Bykov suggests Olga to manipulate "amnesiac" Lobanov and tell him about the fake life which he can't remember, knowing that Semyon would be forced to either play along or break his cover. But Olga can't proceed with it, and tells him the truth; Lobanov, in turn, reveals that he faked the amnesia; this actually enrages Olga, who takes this as a sign of him remaining the same ever-lying bastard he was, and she leaves him, this time permanently.

Gleb's "patient" decides to take his wife's pregnancy test, and use it himself... and receives the positive results. Now he is convinced that he is (somehow) pregnant. Gleb wastes some time on him (just because otherwise he would be forced to do real work), but, with Kupitman's help, reveals that the "patient" has a real, much more serious illness (and not a mental one). Meanwhile, Levin finds Gleb's patient's pregnancy test and now thinks that it belongs to Lyuba. He decides to invite Lyuba into a restaurant, where he would offer to marry her... only to find out that it was misunderstanding.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Ambiguous Situation: Besides the reason why Gleb's patient became the patient in the first place, his wife reveals that he also tried to wear her strings and her swimsuit, and pluck eyebrows... for some reason. Given the guy's overall weird behaviour, it's not possible to tell wether it's the sign of gender non-conformism, mental disorder, or both.
  • Cerebus Retcon: Gleb's patient at first seems to be just some funny loony guy, and his scenes are played for comedy. Then Kupitman reveals the (rather grim) reason why the pregnancy tests showed him the positive results: it's a reaction to the presence of specific hormone, which, in male organism, can cause tumours. By asking Kupitman, Gleb might have actually saved the guy.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: When Lyuba asks Levin wether he invited her to a good restaurant only because she's "pregnant", his attempts to apologise only makes the situation more awkward.
  • Faking Amnesia: Lobanov already has a broken leg, but, to fool Olga into giving him another chance, he decides to pretend to be in much worse condition; specifically, due to a head trauma he now can't remember the last two months, including his breakup with Olga. And due to his condition, he must not be reminded about it. This plan fails, because Bykov tells Olga to take advantage of his "amnesia" and create the fake memories for him; Olga can't lie to him, and decides to tell the truth. Semyon tells her the truth in turn, which enrages her (as he just confessed that he lied to her to make her feel sorry for him), and she leaves him, this time for real.
  • Mistaken for Pregnant:
    • Levin argues with Lyuba about her getting sick on seafood (Levin doesn't believe that the food was that bad, since he actually likes it, and, in fact, eats it regularly), and thinks that there must be something else. Later Gleb's "pregnant" patient leaves one of his pregnancy tests on Lyuba's post, where Levin finds it. He instantly connects the dots.
    • Gleb's patient, for some reason, decided to try his wife's pregnancy test, which gave him the positive result. He even tried several others, with the same result. Now, he is convinced that he is really pregnant... somehow.
  • Mister Seahorse: Gleb's "patient" is convinced that he is pregnant, because he used his wife's pregnancy test, and result was positive. Then the guy tried several more times, with same results. Since he insist on checking wether he, somehow, could really be pregnant, Gleb takes him to do some tests, just for fun (and to avoid real work)... but then Kupitman reveals to him that Gleb's patient can be seriously ill: the reason behind all the tests giving positive results can be hormone, which, in male organism, can cause tumours to grow; Kupitman does not see anything funny in this, and after hearing all this, neither does Gleb.
  • Out of Focus: Varya has no major role in this episode, and only briefly appears in Levin's plot.
  • Put on a Bus: After another of Lobanov's lies gets revealed, Olga disappears from Semyon's life — and from the series.
  • The Slacker: Why Gleb even bothers with his "pregnant" patient? Because if he rejects him, he would just receive the real patient; instead, he would rather waste time with this guy. He blatantly admits it when asked.
  • Sustained Misunderstanding: Varya tells Levin that he must stop buying cheap food for Lyuba; he, instead, misinterprets everything she says as her confirming Lyuba's pregnancy (which isn't even real, because "Lyuba's" pregnancy test belongs to Gleb's male patient). He wouldn't learn the truth until later, when he discusses the situation with Lyuba.
  • Wham Episode: Lobanov ruins his only chance to win Olga back, and loses her forever.
