Recap / The Interns S 12 E 1

Go To

Both Lyuba and Kupitman now regrets sleeping with each other, thinking that it was a big mistake, but feels too awkward to admit it. And both fears that the other one would tell everyone about their "victory", making them into resident laughing stock. When he comes to work, Kupitman, still expecting that Lyuba has told everyone about the past night, now suspects mockery in every "hello", smugness in every friendly smile. But when Rita misses every opportunity to make fun of him, he starts doubting whether Lyuba actually did this. Meanwhile, Lyuba gets congratulated by Bykov, who "was told everything by Kupitman"; Bykov, of course, means Lyuba deciding to stay in the hospital, but Lyuba interprets it as Kupitman bragging about his "victory". She only calms down when she realises that Bykov refers to her returning, meaning that Kupitman preserved the secret. Kupitman and Lyuba, simultaneously, decides that they should come to each other and apologise for thinking so bad about the other one: they had a perfect opportunity to tell everyone, yet never took it. But then Kupitman starts suspecting that Lyuba is actually ashamed of him; Lyuba has the similar thoughts about him. Lyuba asks Kupitman whether he's indeed ashamed of her. He starts denying it, stating that she's much better than she thinks, and that actually he thinks that it's her who's ashamed of him. Lyuba, in turn, starts complimenting him. But they're still feeling awkward, and don't know how this situation would affect their friendship.

Bykov receives a new patient — a reenactor, still dressed in knight armour — with clear dent on his helmet. Bykov assigns Sophia to deal with him. When patient awakes, he, due to brain trauma, sees everything like he's actually in medieval Europe — and Sophia is a princess. He instantly falls in love with her, ignoring her words that she's taken, and promises to "fight" for her. It's not an empty threat, as the patient now challenges Gleb to a duel. When Gleb, after initial shock, gets angry and threatens to beat him up, the patient interprets it as him agreeing on a "weaponless duel". Sophia starts realising that this guy very likely has a concussion, but Gleb still thinks that he's just crazy, and that he would easily "explain" everything to him, scaring him away. The patient still insists on a duel, calling Gleb a "coward" for not showing up, and even puts back his "armour". When Gleb suggests to just go and find somebody else, the patient hits him in the face hard enough to knock him out, and tries to take Sophia away (ignoring her attempts to free her hand or ask about Gleb), but, fortunately, Bykov shows up. After brief examination, he realises what's going on, and plays along with the guy's delusions, pretending that he's a king, and orders the "guards" (orderlies) to bring him to "druid" (psychiatrist), into "exile", for injuring Bykov's "bastard". Soon it turns out that the guy has schizophrenia, and Bykov is angry that they didn't suspect anything when he started acting weirdly.

Alexei's friend from Torzhok needs venereologist's help, but can't do it at home (in short, there's no chance to keep it secret; what sees one, soon knows everyone), and insists on Alexei helping him via phone. Lyosha promises him to consult with Phil; sadly, Phil can't say much from the photo alone. Unfortunately, Phil interprets Lyosha asking "for friend" as him being too shy to reveal that it's actually he who needs help; another issue is that the photo is of very bad quality, so direct examination is required. Phil warns Rita: being Lyosha's girlfriend, she should know about it. Rita angrily confronts Lyosha about it, and he tries to explain the situation with his friend from Torzhok. The friend even makes a video, but Phil, still refusing to believe that it's not just Alexei being shy, insists on examination. To shut Phil up, Alexei agrees — just in time for Rita to show up; now, she wouldn't believe him until he brings the test results. When the friend calls again, Alexei, angry on him for causing him so much troubles over his shyness, tells him to go screw himself.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Cassandra Truth: Alexei was sincere when he asked Phil for help for his friend, but Phil interprets it as Alexei himself needing help. Naturally, it takes Alexei a lot of troubles to actually prove his innocence, especially since Rita soon learns about this.
  • Compliment Backfire: When Lyuba states that Kupitman is likely ashamed of sleeping with her, because she's "certainly not a young fairy", Kupitman tries to insist that she "worths more than a hundred of fairies". Lyuba then asks wether she "worths more" in age, or in weight.
  • Dramatic Irony: Both Kupitman and Lyuba spends the episode expecting that the other one is gloating about their "sexual victory", only to then change opinion into them being ashamed of that night's events — unaware that they both have the same feelings about these events.
  • Hallucinations: Sophia's patient (reenactor, still in his "knight armour), due to brain trauma-induced hallucinations, starts viewing everything around him as if he's really in medieval Europe, with everyone dressed appropriately. He sees Sophia as a "princess"... and Gleb as his competitor. Since guy is actually dangerous in his delusions, Bykov plays along with him, telling him that he is the king (in which the patient believes), and sends him "into exile", for injuring "his bastard", and orders "guards" (orderlies) to escort him to "druid" (psychiatrist). When they leaves, he warns psychiatrist to play along to avoid further problems. Later it turns out that the patient has schizophrenia.
  • Love at First Sight: Sophia's patient (who suffers from brain trauma) sees her as his "princess", and instantly falls in love with her. He completely ignores her saying that she's taken, stating that "he would fight for her anyway". He is deadly serious about it, and even challenges Gleb to a "duel".
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Lyosha's friend from Torzhok has problems, but can't visit venereologist himself (in small town, rumours spreads quickly), so he asks Lyosha to consult him via phone. Alexei tries to ask Phil, who interprets this as the classical "I Have This Friend" trick and (when receives the photos Alexei's friend had sent him), warns Rita that Alexei may be sick and she needs checkup too. Naturally, she angrily confronts Alexei on not simply cheating on her, but putting her at risk of catching STD.
  • Not What It Looks Like: Yes, Rita, it's Alexei being examined by venereologist, but not because he suspects that he may be sick — instead, he wants to prove to that (pretty stubborn) venereologist that he isn't.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: When Bykov realises what's going on with Sophia's patient, he plays along with his "medieval" delusions (by pretending to be a king), realising that it would be easier to calm him down this way than to actually prove anything. It works. He then calls Sophia out for not coming with this idea herself.
