Recap / The Interns S 11 E 10

Go To

Turns out that Bykov still didn't prepare interns' personal files, despite promising to do it around a month ago, and gets asked whether he simply lost them. He agrees to deal with it now. But then he realises that he really did misplace interns' diplomas, and forces interns to help with searching for them. They fails, which makes Bykov realise that he'd lost them somewhere outside of on-call room. Bykov tells interns to continue working, while he would call their alma-maters to receive copies; Maxim reacts to it with grim look on his face... Maxim asks Lyosha to help him with moving bookcase, so they may search for Maxim's diploma here. When asked why bother if Bykov plans to obtain the copies anyway, Max reveals the truth: his diploma is fake. Maxim asks Bykov where he can search for diploma, and gets sent to archive, but, after searching everywhere and irritating Lyuba (who has to fix the mess he made), he only learns that it was never there: Bykov'd visited with some red folder, but took it with himself when leaved. Max asks Bykov whether he visited Kupitman, and when he says that yes, goes to Kupitman's office and makes a mess there, too, still failing to find anything. Kupitman busts him mid-process, and states that Bykov had took the folder with himself. Max thanks him and rushes out, ignoring Kupitman ordering him to fix everything. Maxim asks Bykov wether he'd lost the diploma at Kisegach's office, but Bykov says that it's impossible: he insisted on not keeping diplomas with her, and it was her who ordered him to find them in the first place — and punishes him with three night shifts — one for slackening, one for stupidity... and one just because. But he would lift those shifts if Max finds diplomas before the day shift ends, without asking Kisegach. Max asks Kisegach anyway, and she also tells him that he couldn't forgot the folder here, because he took it with himself... and then remembers that he returned with it, stating that it would be safer with her, about which they both swiftly forgot. Unfortunately, it's too late to give the folder to Bykov, as he already made the calls — and knows the truth. But, despite everything, Bykov respects Maxim as one of his pupils, and gives him a chance to quit by himself and finish his education properly; ff he ever decides to return, he would be welcomed back. Before leaving, Maxim hugs Bykov.

Semyon learns that he now has rather embarrassing nickname amongst colleagues — "Teapot", for yesterday's accident when he broke their last electric teapot. Semyon brings them a new one, but the nickname still persists. As stated by Gennadiy, you don't choose nickname — a nickname chooses you! Gleb suggests Semyon another plan: do something memorable, which would overwrite the "Teapot". Semyon remembers that he was called "Hussar" back in the army, for opening champagne bottles by hitting their cups with knives without breaking them. But his colleagues likes "Teapot" so much, even that fails to convince them. This makes Lobanov going utterly ballistic, and in order to calm down clearly unstable (and still armed with a knife!) Semyon, they "renames" him to "Psycho", which he likes much more, as it sounds "seriously". But later Gennadiy reveals to Gleb that it was a lie to calm down dangerously unstable Lobanov, and that he would remain the "Teapot" forever.

Phil, to pass time, started playfully pretend that he is now Head of Venereology — only for Kupitman to appear. Kupitman asks Phil whether he plans to become Kupitman's successor in the future, and when receives a positive answer, disappoints him by stating that he plans to appoint Sophia on this position. Phil asks Gleb to find Sophia and inform her that Bykov allowed him to take her for a day, to show her how Venereology works (everyone works under Kupitman at least once!). Gleb, knowing that it's the "main season", when the most ugly and disgusting specimen starts showing up, agrees — it would keep Sophia occupied. And Phil proceeds with a plan: right from the start, he provides Sophia with a ward full of most disgusting patients he can find, and tasks with examining them and taking samples, and gives her a strict time limit (while she's uncertain whether she would succeed until tomorrow). She seemingly succeeds, with only two patients left (their cases are too hard for her), still not squicked out, but Phil, worrying that he may fail, gives her another task — examine a whole brigade of workers, then provide them with a briefing about dangers of chaotic sexual contacts, lecturing each one individually; look on her face tells what she thinks about it better than a thousand words. Sophia does that, and proceeds with a next patient — a woman who had so many partners in the last six months, she can't even remember them all; at this point, Sophia barely hides her disgust. Soon, extremely angry Kupitman rushes to Phil's office to tear him a new one: Sophia finally snapped into hysteric, and the only two words which Kupitman can recognise from her crying are "Venereology" and "Never"! In the end, the only one who wins anything from that is Gleb: after that, Sophia wouldn't be able to even think about sex for quite some time...

This episode provides examples of:

  • All for Nothing: In the end, Gennadiy tells Gleb that he didn't actually rename Lobanov from "Teapot" to "Psycho"; he only called him that to calm down dangerously unstable Lobanov before he harms anyone.
  • Ass Shove: Three guesses how ex-proctologist received a nickname "Elbow". Hint: it's related to one incident from his practice...
  • Ax-Crazy: Semyon never was known for being very stable, but when called "Teapot" one time too many, he explodes (or, if you wish, boils), drops the champagne bottle so hard that it shatters, and starts yelling on top of his lungs "I'm not a Teapot!!!" — all while keeping a knife (which he used to open that bottle) in his hand, and standing too close for comfort to his boss. After this, they renames him "Psycho" (which he actually likes, considering it being a sign of their respect).
  • Black Sheep: Maxim is from the long dynasty of doctors... and is the only one to never finish his education, being discharged on fifth course. To not reveal this dishonour to his father, he obtained a fake diploma and became Bykov's intern.
  • Embarrassing Nickname:
    • Semyon gets called "Teapot" by his colleagues, due to him breaking their last electric teapot. Semyon's plot for the rest of the episode involves him (unsuccessfully) provoking them into creating new, less embarrassing nickname instead (he aimed at "Hussar", for hussar-like bottle-opening manner — by hitting the bottle with the knife and opening it this way without damaging the bottle itself). Tons of lame teapot-related jokes ensues.
    • One of Semyon's colleagues is "Elbow". We never learn details, because he asks to not explain it further, but it's somehow related to him being a proctologist before.
    • When clearly unstable (due to being called "Teapot" way too much) Semyon starts yelling on them while still keeping the knife in his hand, his colleagues renames him "psycho". Subverted in that he actually likes it more for being "serious". However, secretly to him, they never actually dropped the "Teapot", just pretended to do it in order to calm him down.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Phil planned to show Sophia (and through her, Kupitman) that she wouldn't be a good venereologist, by giving her extremely devastating experience with worst of the worst from their sphere. He succeeds with it, but traumatises the poor girl for life and causes her so much stress, Kupitman only manages to recognise two words from her crying: "Venereology", and "Never". Kupitman is less than amused when he finds out — and says about it to Phil in no uncertain terms. In fact, the only man to be happy with it is Gleb (who wants to avoid having sex with Sophia, and now she wouldn't even think about it).
  • Imagine Spot: When his attempts to squick Sophia out fails, Phil imagines some distant future, where Sophia is his new boss, while he is still a constantly abused underling.
  • Jerkass Ball: In order to get rid of competitor for future position of the new Head of Venereology, Phil (usually a nicer of the characters) makes everything is his power to guarantee that Sophia would never go anywhere near venereology ever again — by assigning most ugly and disgusting patients to her, hordes of them. Kupitman is not amused.
Kupitman [yelling]: What have you done to the poor little girl?! (...) From her crying, I can understand only two things: "Venereology", and "Never"!
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: You wouldn't receive nickname "Psycho" for being nice and stable person. Considering how Semyon earns it, it certainly fits.
  • Nepotism: Kupitman plans to assign Sophia as his successor, instead of Phil (his friend and protege). Sophia not having anything to do with venereology at all matters much less for him than her being his relative, which he states to Phil's face. Or, rather, he messed with him, because Phil showed too much ambitions and required showing that Kupitman is still his boss, and Phil is still merely a subordinate. Unfortunately, Phil interprets it as him really planning Sophia as his successor, and decides to show Sophia why she can't work in Venereology.
  • Not So Stoic: Maxim previously established himself as a ruthless schemer, backstabber, troll and A-grade jerkass, but when Bykov side-steps the rules to let him quit quietly and finish education, even after learning that his diploma is fake, he can't help but hug Bykov; Bykov lets him do it.
  • Oh, Crap!: When Bykov announces that he would call their alma-maters to receive copies of their diplomas (since he'd lost originals), Maxim reacts with grim look on his face. As we soon learn, he faked his diploma, because he was kicked out from the academy, and if Bykov calls it, all is over.
  • Pet the Dog: Bykov is the last man you would expect to react kindly to the "doctor" with a fake diploma — yet, when he learns about Maxim's actual motives to doing so (Maxim is a descendant of the long dynasty of medics — and only family member who failed to finish medical academy; he was afraid to "shame" his family), he allows him to quit on his own, instead of dishonestly kicking him out (like Kisegach certainly would do), and encourages to finish proper education, after which he would allow him back. Then Maxim hugs him.
  • Put on a Bus: When Bykov learns that Maxim's diploma is fake (and his reasons to fake it), he allows him to quietly quit, so he may finish education and return later.
  • Really Gets Around: Sophia's last patient is a woman who had so many partners in the last six months that she can't even remember them all. She remembers some of them, and even that is too much.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Maxim spends a whole episode searching for his (fake) diploma, so Bykov wouldn't call in his alma-mater and learn that Maxim never finished his education. But it took him so long that Bykov run out of patience and did this anyway — meaning that Maxim is forced to quit internship. However, Bykov agrees to give him another chance if he ever finishes his education properly and returns.
  • Troll: When confronted about wasting a whole month on preparing interns' personal files, only to not doing it in the end, Bykov asks Kisegach to give him "junk" like interns' diplomas, certificates, etc. When (shocked by stupidity of the question) Kisegach points out that this "junk" was supposed to be stored by Bykov, he reacts with a surprise so strong, she panicks on the prospect that he simply lost them. He didn't: he just messed with her, "testing her ability to deal with stress"; she "failed".
