Recap / The Inbetweeners S 3 E 1 The Fashion Show

Go To

Christ, who wrote this?!

Despite Will's opposition, Carli organizes a fashion show for charity; Will changes his mind when Charlotte asks him to model with her; Jay's ear piercings become infected.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Against My Religion: Will tries to get out of helping at the fashion show by telling Mr Gilbert that he has a "moral objection" to fashion shows as he thinks they're just an excuse for vain and popular kids to show off. Mr Gilbert agrees with him - then makes him to do it anyway.
  • Big "NO!": Simon lets out one when he realizes he's had a testicle hanging out during the catwalk and what that means for his reputation going forwards.
  • Blatant Lies: After getting his ear piercing seen to, Jay claims to have got off with the St. John's Ambulance volunteer who treated him. He quickly backtracks when Simon points out that said volunteer is a fellow-pupil's nan.
  • Casanova Wannabe: Alistair makes passes at both Carli and Charlotte, with the implication being that he's going through every girl at the fashion show because he's intent on milking his illness for a pity screw.
  • The Cloudcuckoolander Was Right: When Alistair has a welcome back function after his illness, Neil reckons that there will be sausage rolls because he got them at a funeral once. Will tells Neil that Alistair isn't dead. Turns out, though, there really are sausage rolls.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Granted, Neil isn't the sharpest crayon in any crowd but he honestly expected he would be helping girls undress, not boys.
    • Jay also falls victim to this with his self-inflicted ear piercing, which becomes infected.
  • Disability as an Excuse for Jerkassery: Jay claims that Alistair was always a dick, and stint in hospital and subsequent reliance on a wheelchair have made him even worse than he was before. He's right, as Will soon discovers.
  • Fan Disservice: Simon models with his left bollock hanging out of his Speedos at full-on eye-level for pretty much the entire audience. Joe Thomas really did get one of his balls out for that scene, meaning that the audience reactions — a mixture of surprise, horror and hilarity — are genuine.
  • Hypocrite: Will spends most of the episode protesting against his involvement in the show itself, right up until the moment Charlotte flashes him a smile and asks him to join her on the catwalk. He himself acknowledges this.
  • Inspirationally Disadvantaged: Parodied with Alistair. He was a twat before he had a kidney transplant and ended up in a wheelchair, and is still one after. However, everyone except the main gang treats him like a wonderful person, even holding a fundraiser for him.
  • It's All About Me: When Simon accidentally flashes a testicle at the fashion show, Carli complains that he ruined her big night, in spite of the fact that the whole thing was a charity event to raise money for a dialysis machine.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Plenty.
    • Will doesn't exactly endear himself to anyone by taking against a charity fund-raiser but he is right in that the self-described attractive students just use it as an excuse to satisfy their own narcissistic craving for everyone's attention. Carli proves it by focussing only on making sure her time on the catwalk is as glamourous as possible, even calling it her big night.
    • Mr. Gilbert makes Will manage the donations despite his objections to the entire thing, but only for the express purposes of making sure that the money doesn't get stolen.
    • Jay is right that Alistair is an arsehole, despite nearly everyone else giving him sympathy due to his disease and wheelchair-bound state. Upon meeting Alistair, Will immediately discovers that Jay is right.
    • Alistair might be a total bell-end, but he's right that Will is ruining the event for his own reasons, and that he's a total hypocrite for later modelling some clothes himself just to impress Charlotte.
    • Charlotte is unknowingly cruel in definitively turning down Will, but considering his rather unflattering description of her several episodes ago making her out to be incredibly slutty, it's pretty big of her to even give him the time of day.
  • Littlest Cancer Patient: Averted with Alistair, who is an unpleasant attention-seeker who is disliked by the protagonists.
  • Pet the Dog: Jay helps Simon with his cufflinks and Neil helps Will into extremely tight jeans.
  • Skewed Priorities: Neil is more concerned about finding a non-existent hole to see the girls get changed rather than helping Simon to keep the fashion show running.
  • That Came Out Wrong: Mr. Gilbert falls victim to this after the fashion show debacle — not that he'll admit it to Will and Simon:
Mr. Gilbert: There is nothing funny about testicles, Cooper. As you'll discover tomorrow, in my office.
    Simon: [shocked] What?!
Will: [a bit grossed out] Sorry, sir, but that sounds a bit weird.
Mr. Gilbert: No, it does not.
  • Wardrobe Malfunction: Simon is convinced by Carli to take to the catwalk with her in Speedos and ends up with his left testicle on display.
  • Who Writes This Crap?!: Mr. Gilbert's opinion on the fashion show speeches. He even starts correcting the spelling errors out loud, while reading them out to the audience.
  • Wimp Fight: Will (a short nerd) and Alistair (who's in a wheelchair) get in a physical altercation that consists of Alistair trying to run over Will's feet with his chair, while Will tries to strangle/blind Alistair by throwing a tablecloth on his head. It does not make either of them look very good.
