Recap / The Inbetweeners S 1 E 4 Girlfriend

Go To

All right, funny boy, make me laugh. Without undressing.

Will finds out that going to a mixed-sex school isn't too bad after all as he pulls the most popular girl in the year above. She's fit and, according to rumour, sexually precocious.

This episode contains examples of:

  • All There in the Manual: At the time of the original broadcast, the E4 website had a page that retold the events of the first series episodes from the point of view of minor characters. For this one, it's Wendy Dean (the girl hosting the party); she secretly fancies Neil and was amused when he chose the 12-year-old at the Blind Date event.
  • Berserk Button: Jay has a massive one after an entire episode of the other three taking the piss out of him with their "Aww, football fweind!! *thumbs up*" impressions. He climbs onto his new friend's car and jumps up and down on the bonnet, screaming like a madman in the hope he'll change their minds.
  • The Cloudcuckoolander Was Right. Neil think there's booze hidden in the tumble dryer. He's right!
  • Cringe Comedy: Jay impersonating Crazy Frog in a pathetic attempt to impress Charlotte, while Will and Charlotte standing there in awkward silence as the joke completely bombs. Will's later attempt to have sex with Charlotte also falls under this trope.
  • Feigning Intelligence: The other lads are bewildered to find Neil attempting to read a book. When going on a Blind Date show for charity, he believes it will improve his chances if he seems more intelligent. When Will points out that it will make him still seem stupid, he still doesn't get it. During the show itself, he picks the girl who answers his questions with the most intelligent answers, he winds up with Suzie, a twelve-year-old child prodigy who is taking her A-Levels four years early.
  • Girlfriend in Canada: Will tell Charlotte he had a lot of sex on holiday in Australia, an unverifiable story that's clearly a lie as Will is a virgin.
  • Of Course I'm Not a Virgin: Will blunders this one badly with Charlotte, claiming to have slept with an eleven year old when he was thirteen. When it's clear he has no idea what he's doing when it comes to sex, Charlotte dumps him.
  • Phrase Catcher: Simon says "friend" in a high pitched voice when referring to Jay's friend, knowing full well it annoys Jay.
  • Wild Teen Party: The "cool party" is a tame affair with the parents of the hostess waiting upstairs to send everyone home at 11 o'clock. When Charlotte unexpectedly turns up, it's noted that it's the coolest party they've ever been invited to.
