Recap / The Handmaids Tale S 1 E 5 Faithful

Go To

Offred reminisces about her relationship with Luke. Serena Joy makes a proposition to Offred: they arrange to have Nick do the impregnation in the hopes that they would conceive a child through him and Offred without the Commander or anyone else knowing about it.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Call-Forward: In a flashback, Luke and June have lunch while a group of little girls in matching red dresses play together behind them.
  • Happiness in Slavery: Ofglen 2 used to be a homeless junkie reduced to prostitution so she now supports the Gilead regime because she now has a home, food and is clean. She calls out Offred over her privileged background and warns her that she won't let Offred ruin it for her.
  • Lip-Lock Sun-Block: When Luke and June kiss in the hotel room.
  • Mood Whiplash: The flashback of June and Moira meeting Luke is set to "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" by Kylie Minogue. The sudden end of the upbeat pop music as the scene cuts to present day Offred in Gilead causes definite mood whiplash.
  • Mr. Fanservice: If the final scene of the episode doesn't count as Fanservice itself, Max Minghella being slowly undressed certainly counts as this.
  • Pet the Dog: Grace, the Wife at the new posting of Emily's, suggests skipping the Ceremony that night because she feels sick. Emily/Ofsteven replies with "you can't be sick every month," implying that the Grace is trying to protect her.
  • Recovered Addict: The "new" Ofglen has this and The Oldest Profession as her backstory.
  • Right Through His Pants: When Serena Joy orders Offred to have sex with Nick, he keeps his clothes on, emphasizing that the act lacks all intimacy. But when Offred and Nick make love on their own at the end of the episode, they both undress.
  • Shaking Her Hair Loose: Offred does it before having sex with Nick (handmaids have to wear a bonnet at all times).
  • She's Back: Emily/Ofglen steals a car and runs over a couple armed enforcers, proving that, no matter how horrifically the Gilead regime treats her, the fight hasn't been taken out of her.
  • Suicide Attack: Possibly Emily/Ofglen's motivation to steal the car, given that she doesn't try to escape and drives around in a circle instead.
  • Your Head A-Splode: Emily/Ofglen takes out one of the black-clad armed goons this way after she runs over him with a stolen car.
