Recap / The Grim Adventures Of Billy And Mandy S 4 E 5

Go To

"Attack of the Clowns" contains examples of…

  • Brick Joke:
    • Midway through the episode, Grim and Mandy try to bring a paper machete clown to life as an attempt to remedy Billys fear. It appears not to work, but it does come to life when they leave, growing a ballon body and a rabid temperament, eating anyone in sight. At the end of the episode, it greets the main trio by the door and devours them.
    • When Grim is ranting to Mandy, he says believes the guys in underworld accounting are laughing at him behind his back. The end episode confirms this, after the trio are eaten by the clown.
  • Clownification: Happens to Grim in Billy's establishing dream.
  • Cruel Twist Ending: By the end of the episode, Billy has finally overcome his fear of clowns, namely by replacing it with hatred. Unfortunately, the paper machete clown that Grim brought to life earlier in the episode eats the trio alive, leaving them trapped inside with nothing to do about it but lament on their now shared contempt for clowns.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: A PG-rated version. Billy seemingly murders Irwin, thinking the latter is a clown. We only see Irwin's fake nose dropping to the floor as Billy ominously approaches him with Grim's scythe (and Irwin releases a bloodcurling scream).
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The trio getting eaten by a clown at the end could be seen as this, as just before Billy attacked (and possibly killed) Irwin dressed up as a clown with Grim and Mandy putting it on him to get Billy off their tail.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Being violently shaken by a skeleton clown who is screaming at you "STOP BEING AFRAID OF CLOWNS" in the angriest manner possible is probably the least helpful way to cure someone of their fear of clowns.
  • Overly Long Gag: "DESTROY US ALL! DESTROY US ALL! DESTROY US ALL! I'll take the chicken. DESTROY US ALL!"
  • Spoof Aesop: Billy eventually learns you shouldn't be afraid of things you don't understand or that are different from you, but you should be ANGRY at them instead!
Billy: So you're saying I should beat them up?
Inner Frat Boy: Billy, fighting outside of a hockey rink is wrong, but I'm imaginary so do what you gotta do!

"Complete and Utter Chaos" contains examples of…

  • The Bad Guy Wins: Eris gets away with tricking Billy, Mandy and Grim into looking after the apple of chaos and letting them fall victim to its power. The episode ends with her asking Irwin to watch it for her with gleeful anticipation at what he's about to suffer.
  • Batman Gambit: Eris, no longer feeling up for spreading chaos, leaves the main trio with the apple of chaos. They end up spending the episode fighting over it, culminating in them fusing into some blob like monster. Eris finds them in this state and grabs the apple back, disappointed they weren't responsible with it, only to reveal after leaving that this was her plan all along.
  • Eye Scream: The Apple escapes its cage and enters Billy's bedroom, waking him up by drawing a knife and poking it in his eye.
  • Here We Go Again!: After screwing over the main trio with the Apple of Discord, the final scene has Eris greeting Irwin at his door to rope him into the same situation.
  • Shout-Out: At one point, Grim gets turned into a creature with four legs, a flower-like head, and a flagpole for a tail. How desthpicable.
  • Slasher Smile: Eris sports one after asking Irwin if he would look after her apple.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: The episode borrows the same plot as The Golden Apple; Eris leaves the Apple of Discord in the possession of a trio who cause chaos trying to claim ownership of it.

"DESTROY US ALL!"

When Billy thinks that the clowns want to become the dominant species on the planet, he proceeds to spend nearly half a minute straight yelling that they'll "Destroy us all!".

How well does it match the trope?
