"A Grim Surprise"

Original Air Date: August 2, 2002

Billy tells Grim to help him throw a surprise birthday party for Mandy. Then, a reluctant Grim helps Billy prepare a cake while keeping it a secret from Mandy In the end, a somewhat surprised Mandy reveals that her birthday isn't for the next five months, something that Billy already knew about.

"A Grim Surprise" contains examples of…

  • All for Nothing: Billy had Grim help him make the cake and plan the party even though Mandy's birthday isn't for five months. Mandy is not exactly the grateful type, meaning the effort was even more in vain.
  • Bait-and-Switch: The title card of the episode implies Grim is planning a nasty surprise for someone. The ending turns out to be a grim surprise for him, though thankfully it's not as malicious of a surprise as the one implied by the title card.
  • Shout-Out:
    • When they're finished baking the cake, Grim pokes Billy's stomach, which makes him giggle. This is a reference to the Pillsbury Dough Boy.
    • After Billy tells him he's his best friend, Grim's heart grows three sizes.
  • Surprise Party: Billy ropes Grim into helping him throw one for Mandy.
  • Tyop on the Cover: The title card for this episode has "Surprise" misspelled as "Suprise".
  • Wham Line: When Mandy finally arrives to the party, Grim explains how it was Billy's idea, which then leads to this.
Mandy: Oh, really? Did Billy happen to tell you that my birthday isn't for another five months?

"Beasts and Barbarians"

Original Air Date: August 2, 2002

Billy and Irwin have been playing their favorite video game, Beasts and Barbarians, for three days non-stop. In an attempt to stop their video game addiction, Grim transports them all to a real-life version of the game. Seeing as Billy and Irwin are still doing good in their quest, Grim increases the difficulty by manipulating the traps himself. In the end, Billy, Mandy, and Grim return home escaping from a giant cyclops, while Irwin remains trapped.

"Beasts and Barbarians" contains examples of…

  • Cutting the Knot: The ring-keeping creature tells Mandy that she has to solve a riddle to obtain the ring. Mandy, being Mandy, does this...
Creature: What is black and blue and red all over?
Mandy: (brandishing her fists) That would be you if you don't hand over that ring, pronto!
  • Shout-Out: The scene where Mandy falls into a cave and has to deal with the ring-keeping creature dwelling within is a reference to The Hobbit.
  • Something We Forgot: After much adventuring, Billy, Mandy and Grim finally return home safe and sound, but Grim can't shake the feeling that they're forgetting something. Cue a final shot of Irwin, still hanging precariously onto a branch where Billy had left him several scenes before and complaining that he's starting to get hungry.
