Recap / The Good Wife S1E09 - "Threesome"

Go To

A woman goes on a talkshow to talk about her supposed affair with Peter Florrick. Jonas Stern is being sued and he wants Alicia to defend him.

Tropes

  • Drunk Driver: Stern is charged with a DUI where he hit a cop while being arrested. In actual fact, Stern got drunk immediately after the crash: the arresting officer took his initial low result with a breathalyzer as a false negative, and Alicia figures out from other symptoms that Stern is actually in the early stages of dementia.
  • A Fool for a Client: Stern wants to represent himself with Alicia as his frontwoman, but is eventually forced to back off because Alicia is doing a better job without him "backseat-driving".
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Stern blew a 0.13 on a breathalyzer at the station, which he truthfully attributes to going into a bar to cool off after crashing his car: the arresting officer discarded the initial result of a 0.03 as an equipment error.
  • Insistent Terminology: Grace and Zach argue about whether it's called a "three-way" or a "threesome".
  • Scatterbrained Senior: Alicia realizes from Stern's mood swings and the fact that he forgot they'd already discussed a detail of the case that he's in the early stages of dementia, the actual cause of his car crash.
  • Shame If Something Happened: Alicia asks Peter to make the call girl stop with her tell-all media tour. Peter does so by intimating that he might suggest to another of her johns, an organized crime boss, that if she'd reveal Peter's secrets, she might also reveal his. When she protests that Peter wouldn't dare, he tells her flat-out that she has no idea what he'd be willing to do to protect his family.
  • Start My Own: Stern has been away on sabbatical from the firm for a year and is displeased with the changes Will and Diane have made in his absence. This leads to an argument between the named partners that results in Stern resigning from the firm at the end of the episode to start a new one, and taking a number of key clients.
  • Title Drop: The woman on the talkshow claims that Peter wanted her for a threesome, and that his wife wouldn't agree to one.
