Recap / The Good Wife S1E04 - "Fixed"

Go To

Alicia meets with her husband's lawyers to discuss how much she knew about his infidelity. A paralyzed man sues for damages. Alicia finds a piece of paper that indicates opposing counsel has bribed a juror.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Call-Back: The three previous episodes alluded to SLG pursuing a class-action lawsuit against a pharmaceutical company called Shiffrin-Marks. That case goes to trial in this episode as the A-plot.
  • Jury and Witness Tampering: Alicia stumbles on evidence that suggests somebody bribed a juror, inferring that it's the defense counsel since he has the resources and an outstanding misconduct allegation. This plot thread results in them first swapping a friendly juror for an alternate, then Diane getting fined for contempt by the judge after Kalinda is spotted tailing the jury foreman. After the jury finds in favor of the plaintiff, Alicia realizes their own client was the culprit, but Diane decides to bury it since they've already won.
  • Profiling: Kalinda and Alicia talk to a jury specialist who claims that racial profiling works, so she uses it. Kalinda, who is East Indian, is incensed.
  • Take Back Your Gift: Peter's lawyer sends food and ipods to Alicia's apartment. She puts it all in a garbage bag and takes it back to him, informing him in no uncertain terms that she can't be bought.
  • You Are a Credit to Your Race: Kalinda talks to an elderly lady who lives in the same building as a juror they suspect of taking bribes. The elderly lady says she likes the man "even though he's black".
