The arc of the season begins.
Shaun and his colleagues must choose the new first-year residents at St. Bonaventure.
- Five-Token Band:: The six resident applicants consist of: two white males (one of whom is openly gay), two black females, an Asian male, and a Hispanic male. The current residents and Lim have to decide which four of them to hire. Ultimately, the two who do not get hired are the straight white male (whom most of the others disliked from the start) and the Asian, who voluntarily dropped out after finding the residents' behavior around them unprofessional. The new hires result in this trope applying to all the Season 4 residents: Shaun and Asher are white; Claire, Olivia, and Jordan are black; Park is Asian; Enrique is Hispanic. Shaun also checks off having a character with a disability, and Asher covers having an LGBTQ+ character.
- Foreshadowing: Lea tells Shaun that she needs to constantly protect the hospital from hackers. That will be very important later in season 4 episode 10 "Decryipt".
- Hate Sink: Nobody likes candidate Josh because he's annoying and arrogant.
- Oh, Crap!: The expression on Shaun's face when his colleagues make him realize that he insulted Lea (and that she must be furious with him) is this, and in the most hilarious way possible.
- Too Much Information: Shaun ends up telling the new residents about having a very active sex life with Lea. Lea tries to distract the embarrassment with a joke, but the situation gets bad when Shaun accidentally reveals that he uses headphones to not be bothered by Lea's voice when she is talking on the phone with her mother. This makes Lea furious.
