Go To

"Valentine's Day" is an episode in the fourth season of The Golden Girls.

The girls' Valentine's Day dates all stand them up, so they sit around, eat cheesecake, and look back at memorable Valentine's Days past.

Tropes:

  • Clip Show
  • Dining in the Buff: Averted in the flashback where Dorothy, Blanche and Rose visit a nudist community. They show up for dinner naked only to find out that clothes are required for meals.
  • Historical In-Joke: Sophia claims to have been present at the Valentine's Day Massacre with her husband and father when their car broke down in Chicago (although she does concede that it might have just been a Valentine's Day Massacre).
  • Mood Whiplash: Sophia's flashback jumps from a sweet moment of her husband, Sal, giving her chocolates that he prepared when they left on their trip days ago, to them hightailing it out of there because the wall Sophia's father peed on was right next to the St. Valentine's Day Massacre.
  • Not the Intended Use: Of the three who buy the condoms, only Rose manages to use them at the cruise... but only because Rose fills the condoms with water and throws them at people at the limbo line, as she confesses to the other girls.
  • Shout-Out: During the "Condoms, Roses!" scene, there's a plush toy of Mr. Tickle sitting on a shelf in the background.
  • Tempting Fate: After talking over the decision about buying condoms while shopping at a grocery store, Dorothy, Blanche, and Rose grabs a package of condoms each with discretion to add to their grocery expenses. Blanche remarks with "Now, that wasn't so bad, was it?", only for the cashier to talk to a coworker of his over the speaker about the prices of the condom packages, turning an otherwise discrete move into an Exposed Embarrassing Purchase instead.
  • Trojan Gauntlet: The episode has an incident where Dorothy, Blanche, and Rose are grocery-shopping, in anticipation for their upcoming cruise with their respective date, with Blanche suggesting that they get condoms in case they need protection. When Dorothy and Rose say they feel embarrassed at the prospect of actually buying condoms, Blanche argues that the employees at the grocery store where they're shopping are "discreet professionals", and each of them grabs a package for the cashier to scan. Just their luck, the cashier needs a price check on those condom packages and promptly asks a coworker over the speaker for it.
Blanche: Now, that wasn't so bad, was it?
Cashier: (talks over the speaker) Uh, Joe, I need a price check on some condoms. These three ladies here want a couple of boxes of King George prophylactics.
Joe: (talks over the speaker off-screen) The lambskins or the ultrasensitive?
Cashier: Two of them have the lambskins, and the blonde has the ultrasensitive... in black.
Joe: (talks over the speaker off-screen) The lambskins are $12.95. The black is a dollar extra.
  • Valentine's Day Episode: The episode title is "Valentine's Day", and its premise centers around the girls' previous experiences they had over celebrating/spending the day.
