Go To

"Blind Date" is an episode in the fourth season of The Golden Girls.

Blanche makes a date with a man without realizing that he is blind. Rose, meanwhile, volunteers to lead a kids' tackle football team and enlists Dorothy's help, only for them both to fall ill, prompting Sophia to take over.

Tropes:

  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: During John and Blanche's conversation about how John perceives of the appearances of the woman he's dating, though the last part is just John testing Blanche.
John: When I like somebody, I get to make up what they look like for myself. And when I like somebody a lot, I make up a pretty nice picture.
Blanche: Would it be rude of me to ask just what that picture you have of me is?
John: Oh... you make me smile, so you've got a terrific smile.
    Blanche: *flattered* Yes.
John: You're smart and thoughtful, so you've got beautiful eyes.
    Blanche: *more flattered* YES.
John: And you're a music lover, so you've probably got a big behind.
Blanche: Yes — *realizes what John just said* NO.
John: Just wanted to see if you're paying attention.
  • Combat Pragmatist: A sports-related example that is Played for Laughs. Sophia reveals to Dorothy and Rose at the end of the episode that their team won via the tactic Sophia taught the kids, which involved everyone in the team piling on the star quarterback early on in the match and making him out of commission for the rest of the game, Crippling the Competition to give themselves the needed competitive edge to win.
Dorothy: Ma, that was an underhanded, despicable thing to do!
Sophia: So was WWII. We're talking about Mussolini here.
  • Hypocritical Humor: When Dorothy accuses Tom Gallagher of being too much of "a shallow, insensitive snob" for Blanche, Blanche insists that there's a side of him that most people don't see. Upon Rose's inquiry about what that is, Blanche responds by saying: "I don't know. I'm one of those people."
  • I Ate WHAT?!: Sophia's miracle cure for the flu, consisting of red peppers, oregano, garlic, chicken fat and lard. A sick Dorothy and Rose force it down their throats and after Dorothy complains about how terrible it tastes, Sophia mentions it's meant to be used in a vaporizer, not eaten.
  • Loophole Abuse: The star player in the kids' tackle football team is barred from playing due to not weighing enough, so Sophia, after taking over the coaching position, gives him a sandwich to get him to weigh just enough to qualify.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Played for Laughs. Sophia gives a sandwich to the star player in the kids' tackle football team in order to get him qualified for the game, but it ends up being moot anyway when said sandwich causes him to have a cramp so he has to sit out in the end.
  • Take a Third Option: The exchange regarding the winning factor for the kids' team goes this way:
Rose: It's because of the discipline I taught them.
Dorothy: Baloney. It's because of the team spirit that I taught them.
Sophia: You're both wrong. It's the statute of Mussolini that I taught them.
  • What Does She See in Him?: A gender-flipped, plot-relevant example. The main issue Blanche has towards John, as she confides first to Dorothy and Rose and then to John himself, is due to John's blindness rendering Blanche feeling unsure as to why he would go out with her, knowing he would No-Sell all of her Fanservice-inducing looks and seductive tricks simply because he can't see them.
