Recap / The Goldbergs S 9 E 14 The Steve Weekend

Go To

A Plot: Barry comes face-to-face with his ex-girlfriends and their perfect new boyfriends during Erica and Geoff's joint bachelor/bachelorette party.

B Plot: Adam intervenes when Lou Schwartz takes over the planning of the wedding video and the battle of wills between Lou and Beverly escalates.

  • Beat Them at Their Own Game: Feeling intimidated by how successful the various Steves are, Barry decides to challenge them all to activities he considers himself good at. He loses every single event, not even being a better rapper than Dr. Stephens.
  • The Bus Came Back: The other Adam Goldberg makes an appearance, having come back to town after a failed career in Hollywood and requested by Lou to help produce the wedding video.
  • Escalating War: Lou tries to get revenge for being mostly omitted from the wedding announcement by making the wedding video focus on the Schwartz family, intentionally omitting everything about the Goldbergs. Adam reports this to Beverly, who decides to get revenge by messing with the seating arrangements so all of the Schwartz family has to eat in either the parking lot or a freight elevator. They nearly vow to escalate further and ruin the entire wedding for each other's family until the two Adam Goldbergs convince them to come together for Erica and Geoff.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Initially, Joanne's worried that Barry gets competitive with the Steves because he still has feelings for his exes. He later admits he's just worried that, if he doesn't impress Joanne, she'll end up leaving him for a Steve of her own.
  • It's All About Me: Lou is furious that the announcement Beverly sent to the local newspaper about their children's upcoming wedding only lists him and Linda as "L. & L. Schwartz" while also stating Beverly's full name and all of her accomplishments, and includes a photo of her instead of Erica and Geoff. In the end, it turns out that Beverly was just worried that she wouldn't shine as brightly as accomplished doctor Lou Schwartz if she didn't put the spotlight on herself.
  • Language Barrier: Stephan can only speak two words of English, but Lainey insists that they communicate in "other ways", never actually explaining what they are.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted as, in possibly a direct reference to this trope, all of Barry's exes are either now married to or dating a guy (nick)named Steve.
  • Repetitive Name: One of Barry's exes is now married to a doctor named Stephen Stephens.
  • Snipe Hunt: Lou tries to distract Adam with these while working on the wedding video, such as having him fetch dry cleaning without a ticket (or the dry cleaner's address), so he won't notice how they're not using any footage of the Goldbergs.
