Recap / The Goldbergs S 3 E 10 A Christmas Story

Go To

A Plot: After seeing the Kremps' getting into the holiday spirit together as one happy family, Beverly wants to be — as she says — "good at family" too, so she decides to spice up her family's Jewish traditions and creates the very Christmas-like "Super Hanukkah".

B Plot: Adam is upset that Barry would rather hang out with Lainey during Winter break than him.

  • Appeal to Tradition: When Beverly tries to change their Hanukkah traditions to be more Christmas-y (to gain the love of her children instead of having any complaints about the holiday itself), Pops takes this stance, considering the changes sacrilege and erasing the true meaning of the event.
  • The Bet: It's a family rule to never dare Barry to do anything, because he has no fear and will inevitably end up in trouble. However, getting upset with Barry choosing Lainey over him, Adam triple-dog-dares him to put his Tongue on the Flagpole.
  • Broken Pedestal: Beverly's fear of the Kremps being "better at family" than her family turns out to be unfounded when she learns they got their dog sick from eggnog, one of the boys shot the other with their B.B. Gun, and they burnt their Christmas ham; rather than compete further, she invites them to share a Goldberg tradition of eating at a Chinese restaurant together.
  • Calvinball: Adam and Barry bring back "Ball-ball", where the only consistent rule is having to say "ball-ball" when scoring a point.
  • Didn't Think This Through: After Barry tricks Adam into getting stuck on a tether-ball pole with him, Adam reminds him that they're now trapped, alone in the cold and darkness, without anybody knowing where they are to come save them.
  • Distinction Without a Difference: Beverly's "Super Hanukkah" definitely isn't Christmas, the "Hanukkah Bush" isn't a trimmed-down Christmas Tree, the "Peppermint J's" aren't Candy Canes...
  • Everyone Is Christian at Christmas: To show up the Kremps, Beverly turns Hanukkah into "Super Hanukkah", which basically turns it into Christmas. Pops is not too happy about it.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: When Barry cuts Adam out of "Ball-ball" and watching A Christmas Story together in favor of doing those things with Lainey, Adam becomes quite upset. Lainey apologizes when she finds out, though it takes being trapped on a pole together for Barry to admit that he could never replace Adam.
  • Guilt Complex: To counter Beverly trying to turn their Hanukkah into an overly festive Christmas, Pops dresses up as "Hanuklaus" and talks about the history of their family's suffering.
  • Hanukkah Episode: Beverly creates "Super Hanukkah" in an attempt to celebrate more like the family's Christian neighbors.
  • Noodle Incident: Learning about Adam's jealousy, Lainey vows not to come between a pair of brothers "again", only mentioning that the last time she did, they were both hot.
  • Peking Duck Christmas: After the Kremps' Christmas dinner is ruined, Beverly takes them to their favorite Chinese restaurant.
Mrs. Kremp: Who even knew restaurants were open today?
Beverly: We knew. Chinese on Christmas, it's kind of our thing.
  • Shout-Out: Adam and Barry used to watch A Christmas Story together, and inspired by a scene from it, Adam attempts to get Barry to stay instead of leaving with Lainey by daring him to lick a metal pole.
  • Tongue on the Flagpole: Adam dares Barry into getting his tongue frozen to a pole. Barry gets even by pulling Adam into the pole while offering a forgiveness hug, leaving them both stuck. They eventually free themselves by wriggling the pole out of the ground and taking it home with them, and agree with Murray's declaration that he's raised morons.
