Recap / The Goldbergs S 10 E 13 Moms Need Other Moms

Go To

A Plot: Erica becomes friends with another young mother that clashes with Beverly's parenting style. However, when it turns out the other mother is still struggling in some regards, Beverly's advice turns out to be useful after all.

B Plot: Barry and Adam team up to make some money by making an edu-tainment show like The Adventures of Slim Goodbody, in order for Barry to afford to live on his own instead of having to share a bedroom.

  • Edible Theme Clothing: Barry makes a Slim Goodbody-type costume out of real deli meats for the school assembly. It looks and smells gross; and what's more, Lucky followed him from home and starts chewing the sausages used to represent the intestines.
  • Food and Animal Attraction: Lucky followed Barry to the assembly to eat the meats on his costume.
  • I Ate WHAT?!: In The Tag, Barry apologizes to the JTP for his past as a bad roommate by serving them barbequed meats. At first the JTP appreciate it, but then Naked Rob bites into a button, and Barry reveals that it's the repurposed remains of the day-old and partially-dog-chewed deli meat suit he'd been wearing for his Slim Goodbody-style performance. This disgusts Rob and Matt and makes them angrily order Barry to leave, though Andy admits that the sausages are still alright.
  • Inadvertent Entrance Cue: In the opening, when Beverly states that Erica should heed her motherly advice because she's raised three successful children, both Adam and Barry walk in acting like Manchildren, the former having forgotten to go to a dentist appointment and the latter upset after losing a game against some kids.
  • Not So Above It All: Erica meets Lauren and sees how well behaved her baby is and how confident and well put together she seems as a mother, while Erica is barely holding on to her sanity. Then one night Erica comes to Lauren's home and finds her exasperated that her baby won't go to sleep. Erica manages to calm her down by letting the baby teeth on a chicken bone, which she earlier criticized Beverly for doing to Muriel.
  • Parental Neglect: The A plot centers around Erica thinking that Beverly's outdated parenting style is endangering baby Muriel, such as not bothering to cover electric outlets and letting her teeth on chicken bones and prawns without making sure that Muriel doesn't have allergies. However, when Erica's new friend Lauren can't get her own baby to calm down from a six-hour tantrum, teething on a chicken bone does the trick, and they admit that maybe not all of Beverly's tricks and tips are as foolish as they initially seemed.
  • The Perfectionist: First, Barry ends up kicking Adam out of his edu-tainment show because Adam made a puppet of a cartoon heart to teach kids about the cardiovascular system, and Barry demands complete anatomical accuracy over things that kids would actually enjoy. Later, Barry's trying to find an outfit for his Slim Goodbody-style act, and dismisses a body suit depicting 200 different bones on the human body because there's supposed to be 206 bones.
  • Title Drop: Stated by Beverly at the end of the episode, when she talks to Erica and the other mom about how they should all be working together instead of trying to one-up each other.
