Recap / The Gentlemen S 01 E 02 Tackle Tommy Woo Woo

Go To

The toffs and their gamekeeper hunt a new kind of prey. Susie enlists some help to clean up the mess, and Halstead Manor is blessed with a holy visitor.

This episode shows examples of...

  • All for Nothing: Eddie comes up with a plan to frame Jethro for Tommy's murder, having the former flee the country with the money they were going to give to Dixon as insurance that he won't talk. In the course of doing so, Eddie ended up killing another man and getting shot himself. not only is it ambiguous whether the Gospel buys the frame-up job, but after sending him off, Eddie and Jethro are unaware Susie isn't taking any chances, and has Jethro by the cleaner killed at the end of the episode.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Much like Mickey Pearson when it comes to Lord George's heroin operation, Susie shows a clear disgust with Johnston for making money selling crystal meth due to the "violent price tag" that comes from becoming addicted to it.
  • Hope Spot: Poor Jethro who leaves on a boat with several million pounds for Australia unaware that he's never going to make it there. The same is true for Eddie who worked so hard to save him, up to and including getting shot for his troubles.
  • Mythology Gag: Jethro's flat appears to be the same flat where Raymond finds Laura in the original film.
    • In addition, when meeting with Susie’s father, Bobby Glass, Eddie finds himself enjoying some fine steak cooked on an outdoor barbecue, much like the one Raymond owns. It even warms your feet!
  • Sinister Minister: The Gospel, a Liverpudlian preacher turned ruthless gangster who reads Bible verses while having people killed.
  • Title Drop: The episode's title is Jethro's text to his boss The Gospel, trying to warn him that Freddy killed Tommy. Unfortunately for him, texting while being chased through the woods and auto-correct caused him to send a cryptically nonsensical text instead.
