Recap / The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air S 1 E 16 Lucky Charm

Go To

Will meets Jameson Whitworth, one of Uncle Phil's biggest clients. After Will helps him hit a hole-in-one, the very superstitious Jameson has him assist in major financial decisions that he knows nothing about.

This work provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Accidental Hero: Philip ends up winning Jameson back to his firm after being fired because he mentioned that his birthday is in January. Jameson gives his business back under the impression that Philip is a Capricorn, and even though his birthday is on the 30th, making him an Aquarius, Philip recognizes what is happening and says nothing about it.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Although the Banks all consider Jameson to be insane, they take his quirks extremely seriously to avoid losing his very profitable business.
  • Butt-Monkey: Peter Leonard of Firth, Wynn and Meyer is treated terribly by his coworkers, who only bring him to meet with Jameson because three is his lucky number, and Henry Firth uses him while acknowledging Jameson's disregard for lawyers.
  • Caligula's Horse: A very disturbing example in that Jameson doesn't just consider his dog Sparky to be one of his closest confidants; Sparky has been dead for a long time and Jameson talks to his stuffed corpse.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Jameson is one to a great degree, basing most of his decisions on horoscopes and lucky numbers.
Will: [...] The planet he's on ain't even been discovered yet!
  • Good Luck Charm: Jameson considers Will to be this for him, as various coincidences revolving around Will occur up until the end of the episode, when Jameson loses millions and his view on will does a complete 180.
  • The Grovel: Philip and his Firth, Wynn and Meyer colleagues plan to do this to get Jameson to give them his business back.
  • Totally Radical: Justified in that Jameson models his street lingo directly off Will, although it's still disturbing to Philip and his firm partners.
